Sperry According to this theory, each side of the brain controls different types of thinking. It is said that there are people who prefer one type of thinking over the other. As an example for this, a person who is “left-brained” is often said to be more logical, analytical, and objective. A person who is said to be “right- brained” is more intuitive, thoughtful and subjective. In psychology, the theory is based on the lateralization of brain function. The brain contains two hemispheres that each performs a number of roles. According to Seunggu Han, MD in his medical review, the two sides of the brain communicates with one another via corpus callosum (the largest connective pathway in the brain which is made up of two hundred million nerve fibers which divides the two hemispheres of the brain). According to the research of Roger W. Sperry, some abilities associated with right-brain side of the brain is connected with: e Imagination ¢ Arts * Creativity * Music e Holistic thinking ¢ Color ¢ Rhythm e Recognizing faces ¢ Images ¢ Day dreaming e Expressing emotions ¢ Intuition ¢ Reading Emotions Furthermore, Sperry’s research also suggests that the left-side of the brain is also connected to: e Language *Reasoning ¢Facts e Logic * Sequencing * Mathematics e Critical thinking ¢ Linear thinking e Numbers ¢ Thinking in words There is nothing good or bad about either preference. Both orientations can be equally successful in accomplishing a single task; however, one may be more appropriate over the other depending on the situation.
