ORAL COMMUNICATION Persuasive Speech Multilingualism in the 21st Century “Bonjour!”, “Konnichiwa!”, “Ola!”, “Namaste!”, “Annyeonghaseyo!” and “Hello!” These are the words used for greetings in different countries. I just spoke in six different languages, and doesn’t that sound great to the ears? It felt like I was in various nations for a brief time. Hence, I remembered Charlemagne saying, "To have another language is to possess a second soul" felt surreal. In this modern society, the use of several languages besides their mother tongue and English, known as multilingualism, really has its benefits. It has its perks, edges, and great privileges. Expand in employment possibilities is one of its advantages since most companies now operate globally, and they are seeking applicants who can speak more than one language. Communicating in the same language as your client helps your businesses to direct transactions and initiate negotiations in a more pleasant manner. Multilingualism further grants you the chance to look at the window of another culture. You will have the experience of seeing a glimpse of their lifestyle and also see a broader perspective in life. You will be able to know their manners, attitude, and traditions, and the same goes for you. You can yield your views and opinions more effortlessly. You learn from them and they will also learn from you because the language is no longer a barrier. To converse freely without the restraints and concerns of miscommunication is like swallowing a lump in your throat. For us, students of the Humanities and Social Science strand, being multilingual is a good asset. We can start from small greetings into clauses and eventually construct sentences. It is a troublesome road but a fulfilling one and is useful when the right time comes. As Ludwig Wittgenstein states, "The limit of my language is the limit of my world". Therefore, prepare not to close your knowledge of this realm by restricting your learning in languages.
