But a player who hasn’t developed their craft and worked on their passing game is marking themself down when it comes to selection. Developing your ball skills will open up opportunities on the field and stand out to coaches and selectors. DETAIL - PETER BREEN - PASSING – Part 1PAGE | 5 PART 1 TRAINING THE BODY TO PASS. 09 DECISION MAKING. ■ Test this at training first making a decision pre catching the ball. Pass or run. ■ Deciding pre catch will allow you to be explosive with speed on the run or pass. ■ A fast transfer pass will give outside players time, vision and opportunity. A huge asset in your game. ■ Palms to the ground with your eyes looking through fingertips to the target. ■ Triceps extension after using chest and core rip for power. ■ Key point is not letting the energy flow out and over rotate from the line of the target. 08 FOLLOW THROUGH. ■ Key muscles for the start of the pass from triple threat are the biceps and pec. ■ Shoot hands straight to target, this will improve pass transfer speed. ■ Use chest and core rip to bring more power to the pass. 07 PASSING POWER. DETAIL - PETER BREEN - PASSING – Part 2PAGE | 6 ■ Use a 2-4kg dumbbell. Anything heavier will take away from technique. ■ Both hands shoot straight to the target not getting away from the line of the target. ■ After band and dumbbell drills complete the set with rugby balls to transfer the muscle learning. 12 LIGHT DUMBBELL PASSING – RUGBY BALL ■ Explosive power from triple threat position. ■ Hands shooting straight to the target, not leaving the line of that path. ■ Late rotation and triceps extension, finish with palms pointing down to the ground. 11 BAND DRILL – PASSING PUNCH. ■ Set band height just above hip bone. Hips and chest start square. ■ Elbow tucked close to the body, triple threat height with hands. ■ Off hand pointing palm down to target - Core and chest rotates aggressively and stops in line with target. 10 BAND DRILL – CHEST & CORE ROTATION POWER. If players are struggling with technique or power in their passing game, take the ball out of the equation. Use these drills below to get the “feel” into the body and activate the right muscle groups for passing. On the other end of the scale players wanting to go from semi pro to pro can use these exercises to take their passing to another level. PART 2 EXERCISES FOR PASSING. DETAIL - PETER BREEN - PASSING – Part 2PAGE | 7 PART 2 EXERCISES FOR PASSING. ■ Triple threat starting point, above hip bone. ■ Use core and chest rotation power, finish off the pass with triceps extension. ■ Use drill off both feet, inside foot up, outside foot up. 14 LIGHT MED BALL WALL/PARTNER PASSING. ■ Use a 2-4kg dumbbell. Anything heavier will take away from technique. ■ First set walking practicing passing motion on the outside foot. Repeat off the inside foot. ■ Learn to detach the upper half of your body from the lower half during passing. 13 WALKING DUMBBELL DRILL, WALK, JOG, RUN. DETAIL - PETER BREEN - PASSING – Part 3PAGE | 10 PART 3 BALL SKILL AND COORDINATION. ■ Triple threat starting position, store energy pre pass. Biceps, pec and core. ■ With chest and core power shoot hands to target, follow through palms down looking through fingers. ■ Change distance, footwork and angle of the passing target. 21 TWO HAND RUGBY PASS. ■ Set body sideways to the wall, the ball starts from the triple threat position. ■ Pass the ball with one hand behind the back trying to hit a target on the wall. ■ Progress by changing distance and power behind the pass. 20 BEHIND THE BACK PASS. DETAIL - PETER BREEN - PASSING – Part 4PAGE | 11 ■ Pressure down through the ball feeling a strong grip. ■ Roll the ball away from the body loading up the biceps and pec. ■ Off hand pointing to target palm down to the ground. Finish both hands to target looking through fingertips. 24 ONE KNEE PASSING DRILL - ONE HAND. ■ Fingers spread wide on the ball for best grip, hand near the back of the ball. ■ Starting point just outside your mid line with your hand gripping or slightly under the ball. ■ Pre pass engage the biceps and pec with the body in a strong position. Punch to target, finish palm down. 23 PISTOL DRILL - ONE HAND. ■ Back hand close to the mid line rather than the back nose of the ball. ■ Front hand with finger tips on the ball front thumb helping to generate spin. ■ Starting height just on the belly button, elbows tucked to the side of the body. 22 SHOOTING HANDS DRILL - TWO HANDS. PART 4 PASSING THE RUGBY BALL. World class skill stands out on the field, we can add strength and conditioning to your game in a short time. DETAIL - PETER BREEN - PASSING – Part 4PAGE | 12 PART 4 PASSING THE RUGBY BALL. ■ Staring with the ball above the hip bone on your lead hip towards the target. ■ Biceps, pec and body engaged ready to put energy through the ball. ■ Shoot hands to target finishing palms down looking through fingertips. ■ Starting with the ball above your hip bone on your back hip from the target. ■ Extra power generated from the back hip using biceps, pec and chest power through the ball. ■ Shoot hands to target finishing palms down looking through fingertips. 26 FRONT HIP PASSING. 27 BACK HIP PASSING. ■ Hands straight to passing position, back hand already loaded, front hand thumb tension and grip. ■ Chest starts at the ball and then use chest and core rip to add power to the pass. ■ Finish with body weight through the front leg. Hands palms down to target looking through fingertips. 25 ONE KNEE PASSING DRILL - TWO HANDS.
