PGP: History, Functionality, and Encryption Techniques, Exercises of Cryptography and System Security

Pgp, or pretty good privacy, is a computer program that offers cryptographic privacy and authentication. Created by philip zimmermann in 1991, it initially focused on encrypting email messages and attachments using public-key cryptography. Pgp binds public keys to user identities and employs both asymmetric and symmetric key encryption algorithms. The sender uses the recipient's public key to encrypt a session key, which is then used to encrypt the plaintext message.

It was originally created by Philip Zimmermann in 1991. While originally used primarily for encrypting the contents of email messages and attachments from a desktop client, PGP encryption uses public-key cryptography and includes a system which binds the public keys to user identities. PGP message encryption uses both asymmetric key encryption and symmetric key encryption algorithms. When encrypting a message, the sender uses the public key half of the recipient's linked key pair to encrypt a session key. That session key is used, in turn, to encrypt the plaintext of the message using symmetric key encyption. docsity.com
