observe moon soon after sunset
make notes describing what you saw
notice the following: – moon’s location in the sky relative to your surroundings, its shape, anything you see on it – How it changed from the previous observation
Try to do this at same time and place
turn in report on the class web site within two days of doing it
do this on 4 different night
all four must be turned in by Sept 12 for credit Planets & moons reflect sunlight
planets and moons of the solar system do not emit (produce) their own light
they reflect light emitted by the sun
weather or temperature on the surface of a planet or moon depends mainly on the sunlight it receives – very little heat comes form interior of planet The view from the sun The view from the Earth Phases of the Moon (text sec 3.5)
hemisphere of moon towards sun is bright (“daytime”)
hemisphere away from sun is dark (“nighttime”)
we view various combinations of day and night sides, depending on position of moon and sun
phase (“shape”) we see depends on angle between moon and sun
