PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9 Grade Participation Skills and Techniques Quarter 1/3 Last Update August 2016 Concepts: By the end of high school, students will be college and career ready, as demonstrated by the ability to plan and implement different types of personal fitness programs, demonstrate competency in lifetime activities, describe key concepts associated with successful participation in physical activity, model responsible behavior while engaged in physical activity, and fill a need for self-expression, challenge, social interaction and enjoyment. Skills: • Measure heart rate • Warm up and cool down safely • Play man to man defense • Play a zone defense • Juke or dodge a defender • Conduct a visualization exercise • Strand 1: Students will achieve a level of competency in motor skills and movement patterns. • Strand 2: Students will apply knowledge to attain efficient movement and performance. • Strand 5: Students will appraise the personal value of physical activity as a tool for wellness, challenges, and interacting with appropriate social skills with friends and family. Key Standards: 1.2 Demonstrate individual competency through testing and participation in five or more lifetime activities and/or in dance forms used in cultural and social occasions. 1.3 Participate in aerobic and anaerobic activities that will promote health-related fitness. 2.4 Use movement concepts and principles (e.g., force, motion, rotation) to analyze and improve performance of self and/or others in a selected skill or dance movement. 2.5 Participate in a number of individual and team activities, demonstrating strategies and rules. 2.6 Identify safeguards regarding warming up and cooling down, hydration, and potentially hazardous exercises. 5.1 Analyze the mental, social, and psychological health benefits of a self-selected physical activity. Physical Education Key Concepts Vocabulary students should use Lessons I can: • Demonstrate efficient defense during a game by deflecting a ball or denying a passing within my zone. • Employ offensive maneuvers to receive a pass during a game. • Demonstrate the difference between ballet, modern, hip-hop, & tap dance forms. • Organize the stages of learning a motor skill. • Identify examples of social and technical dance forms. • Identify skill-specific cues for a variety of physical activities. • Use movement concepts & principals to analyze and improve my performance. • Identify safeguards regarding warming up, cooling down, hydration • Participate in five or more lifetime activities. • Model responsible behavior while participating in physical activity. • Explain the mental, social, and psychological health benefits of self-selected activity. • Choose an appropriate level of challenge to experience success. • Identify the opportunity for social support in self-selected activity or dance.
