The activities may include basketball, touch football, floor hockey, softball, speedball, tennis, volleyball, badminton, pickle ball, soccer. The course will include fitness testing, weight training, swimming (learning or enhancing strokes), and cross country running/ aerobic fitness. Instructional Methods and Assessments:​ Instruction will include teacher demonstrations, lecture, skill practice and a study guide will be distributed for almost every unit. Assessments include fitness testing (on fitness principles) worth 25% of grade in both quarters, units may include skills tests and written tests where appropriate, and daily observation of participation and attendance. Long term fitness goal setting will also be a part of the grade mark. Basis for Student Success:​ Students are to have appropriate physical education clothing daily and provide a consistent high level of effort, and positive attitude throughout the class period. Health 8 Course#: 0166 – Quarter Required Course Grade Levels: 8 Pre-Requisites: None Course Description: ​The class will focus on CPR (American Red Cross Certification available), Chemical Abuse (Tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana), and communication/relationships. A quarter long student prep period will fill the remaining quarter. Instructional Methods and Assessments: ​CPR skills testing- Certification available for CPR, Minnesota National Guard Basis for Student Success:​ Daily work and skill work on mannequins Physical Education 9 Course#: 0167 – Required Course Grade Levels: 9 Pre-Requisites: Successful completion of PE 8 Course Description: ​The fitness based emphasis of this course is to develop teamwork, promote a healthy life-style and develop skills for lifetime sports. Students will also have the opportunity to expand their training and personalize their workouts. There is an expectation of hard work and a desire to improve. Instructional Methods and Assessment: Physical testing may include Big 3 (bench press, squat, and hang clean), 40 yd dash, 300 shuttle, mile run. Teacher observation of daily participation is required. Basis for Student Success: Students are to have appropriate physical education clothing daily and demonstrate an intrinsic desire to improve the current level of fitness and athletic ability. Learn and understand the importance of exercise, nutrition, and “balance” for the development and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. Recognize the value of physical activity in stress reduction. Learn and apply safety procedures related to self and others. Concepts may include and will not be limited to: Strength training, aerobic development, increasing speed and reaction time, circuit training, plyometrics, agility and minimal alternative workouts. Instructional Methods and Assessment: Instruction will include teacher demonstrations. In this class, students will alternate days between weight training and aerobic activities, monitor and adjust a personal physical fitness program, measure and interpret their personal physical fitness program, select activities that are personally enjoyable, respect individual differences, and experience the joy and satisfaction of physical activity.
