Office Hours: No formal office hours are scheduled. However, there should be no difficulty making an appointment with the instructor. Instructor’s Secretary: Ms. Rachel McLaughlin, 122 Kilgore Course Description: The course will be developed around the principles and practices involved in sexual (seed) and asexual (vegetative) propagation of plants. Emphasis will be placed on the technical aspects of plant propagation, as well as the biological basis for the responses demonstrated by plant species to different propagation protocols. Lecture Type: Semi-formal (clarification questions encouraged, periodic class discussions). PowerPoint presentations and other course materials will be posted on the NCSU MODDLE server (http://moodle.wolfware.ncsu.edu/) Laboratories: Introduction of propagation techniques and their rationale, individual and team technique practice, experimentation and discussion of results, questions and problem solving. A laboratory notebook available at the NCSU bookstore is required (cost around $13.00), and will be used to record data from the various laboratory exercises. This notebook MUST be brought to all laboratory sessions, and will be graded twice during the semester: at midterm and at the conclusion of the semester. Each student will have assigned greenhouse propagation space for hands-on experience. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students should: 1. Be well versed in both theoretical and practical knowledge of the major types of sexual and asexual propagation. 2. Have sufficient training in plant propagation to function effectively in commercial propagation enterprises. 3. Have an understanding of the importance of research in developing propagation protocols for particular species, and particularly the application of problem-solving techniques for the development of protocols. 4. Have sufficient background in plant propagation to facilitate more advanced study in the discipline. 5. Appreciate that Plant Propagation is a multi-disciplinary subject that requires a broad understanding of many biological science areas. 6. Have had way too much fun! Attendance Policy: You are expected to attend all lectures. Attendance in class is a demonstration of your commitment to the class, to your education, and your professional development. I do take attendance, but your attendance record in lecture is not used in calculation of your final grade. The exception to this policy is that all students are required to attend the guest lecture. Four points will be deducted from your final semester average for missing the guest lecture. I reserve the right to adjust the final grade upward in cases of excellent class attendance, class participation, and demonstration of professional commitment and a positive attitude. Anyone not attending class without prior approval from the instructor should not expect to receive personal remedial help from the instructor or the teaching assistants. Also, if you miss a class in which handouts are provided, you are responsible for getting those handouts from a classmate. I only bring handouts to class for one session. Likewise, it is your responsibility to check with a classmate for any announcements regarding upcoming assignments, due dates, changes in exam scheduling, etc that are made in a class session that you missed. You are all adults, and you, your family, and the citizens of this state are all making an investment in your education. Honor that investment and participate in class! Attendance each week in laboratory is mandatory and will constitute a portion of your grade. Missed lab work cannot be made up. Each week you are expected to complete the entire laboratory exercise. Any student leaving before the exercise is completed will be marked absent for that particular lab. Common Courtesy: Please turn off cell phones and other electronic devices prior to entering class. If such a device rings during class, please turn it off immediately. If you need to receive an important call (anticipated family or personal emergency), please set your phone on vibrate. Also, please refrain from: - leaving trash in the classroom - eating during class (especially Nacho Cheese Doritos) - speaking in a disruptive manner - carrying on extraneous conversations with each other during the class - if you arrive late, please enter through the rear door - unprofessional and immature behavior - Social Networking. Use of Facebook or other social network site during class is NOT permitted. If you need to find out what your friends had for breakfast, please call them before class.
