The Political Self Understanding the Self Activity 9 Watch the film, Dekada Sitenta (70) (Directed by Chito S. Rofio) and compare the kind of family relationships and politics then and now in the Philippines. Make a reflection paper. Suggestion to watch The History of The Philippines in 12 Minutes : 2v=P- “Tranquil shores are only for those who boldly oppose raging waves during storms” this is a quote from the movie Dekada Sitenta, the story tells about the Bartolome family’s life during the 1970’s martial law in the Philippines. The movie started off by showing the life of the family before Marcos was declared the president of the Philippines during their times. Everything was peaceful, kids just playing around in the street and not worrying about them being kidnapped or taken away. The Bartolome is a simple middle-class family. They have five sons named Julian “Jules” Bartolome, being the eldest son, Isagani “Gani” Bartolome, the second son, Emmanuel “Em” Bartolome, third son, Jason Bartolome, the fourth son, and Benjamin “Bingo” Bartolome, the youngest son. Family relationships before are very different from what we have to day. Although, the father is still assigned to sustain the family needs, commonly they don’t let their wives work, but in today’s generation women are free to choose what they would do in their lives. There are even instances that women are the ones who earns for the family to sustain their needs. I have also noticed how family members before are very close to each other, they can easily open up subjects regarding matters they are concerned about, and they are willing to fix the problem or talk it out. In the present time, family members are distant from one another due to many reasons, one reason is because of the technology we have today. We spent too much time with our gadgets without realizing the time we waste while using our phones. Teenage and unplanned pregnancy is still a problem in the Philippines todays, in fact, the rate is rapidly increasing. It is likely to occur in marginalized communities, commonly driven by poverty and lack of education and employment opportunities. The Filipino people went through a period of struggle, during Marcos’ regime, and these lessons are imprinted in people’s mind, particularly among the older generation. Inflation, which measures how fast prices are rising, exceeded fifty percent in 1984. Job opportunities dried up. Millions were pushed into poverty, and hunger skyrocketed. The current president of the Philippines today is Rodrigo Duterte. The president has repeatedly expressed his admiration for Marcos and threatened as well to declare martial law nationwide. One of the most notable changes in policy under the Duterte administration involves the cultivation of stronger ties with China. On the other hand, President Duterte’s most visible campaign has focused on the eradication of crime and illegal substance use, like marijuana and drugs. While these efforts have resulted in mass surrenders to the police, the campaign has faced criticism from both local and global organisations due to concerns over human rights violations. I have realized that we need to be vocal with the way we express ourselves about our opinions or take concerning occurrences in our country.
