PORTRAIT of a “TERRORIST” ORGANIZATION1 Details: This is a group exercise that will be due next week (11 October). The assignment is to design a “terrorist” organization and describe it to your classmates. In addition I would like to receive a written report (portrait) of the organization that your group has designed. Your group is expected to provide a cover page, which includes the names of your group members, the name of your organization, and a title for your presentation. In completing your assignment, you are expected to cite any relevant work (this includes internet sources), using proper citations. The Assignment: Your assignment is to describe a “terrorist” organization of your own creation, rather than a real organization. In constructing a portrait of your organization, you must deal with the following: Ideology: Who are you and what are you fighting for/against? Describe the nature and scope of the social or political “threat” that necessitated the creation of your organization. Explain why your organization cannot effect change via “normal” (i.e., non-violent) forms of protest or political action, thereby explaining why your organization feels the need to resort to violence in order to achieve its aims. In this section you should include a brief “statement of principles” (i.e., the motto or mission statement of your organization.) Breakdown of Membership: describe your organization’s leaders, and general membership, in terms of age, social background, education, gender, ethnicity (if relevant). Organization and Security: Detail the size and structure of your organization. Is it divided into smaller cells, wider columns, regional bodies, etc.? If it is small, how will it be effective? If medium-sized, or large, how do the constituent parts of the organization interact? How do you maintain security of, and within, the organization? What measures have you included in your overall organization scheme to help avoid infiltration by police and security agents, or discovery/capture by counter-intelligence services? How do you deal with the potential of members defecting or leaving the organization? Lastly, given your general approach to these issues, how do you maintain morale? 1 This assignment is based on a design developed by Professor Troy McGrath.
