Position of Nicht The negative nicht follows the following grammatical situations or structures: a. Simple verbs: Die Professorin geht nicht. The professor’s not going. b. Direct objects: Wir haben dieses Buch nicht. We don’t have this book. c. Indirect objects: Sie schreibt mir nicht. She’s not writing to me. d. Both direct and indirect objects together: Er gibt seinem Bruder die Zeitung nicht. He’s not giving his brother the newspaper. e. Adverbs of time: Die Kinder kommen heute nicht. The kids aren’t coming today. f. At the end of a simple sentence, if nothing specific’s being negated: Heute regnet es nicht. Today it’s not raining. The negative nicht precedes the following grammatical situations or structures: a. Predicate Nominatives: Der Mann ist nicht der Präsident. The man is not the president. b. Prepositional Phrases: Meine Schwester wohnt nicht in Louisiana. My sister doesn’t live in Louisiana. c. Predicate adjectives: Mein Sohn ist nicht alt. My son’s not old. d. Predicate adverbs: Der Wagen fährt nicht schnell. The car doesn’t drive fast. e. Grammatical elements that have to be at the end of the sentence, like infinitives, past participles or “separable verb-prefixes”. Das Kind kann nicht laufen. [infinitive] The child can’t walk. Das Kind hat nicht gegessen.[past participle] The child hasn’t eaten. Das Kind kam nicht mit. [separable verb-prefix] The child didn’t come along.
