UGALDE STEM 12- A ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES (EAPP) POSITION PAPER Legalizing Divorce in the Philippines I stand in favor of legalizing divorce in the Philippines. I believe that divorce should be an option for couples who have irreconcilable differences and cannot continue their marriage. Divorce should be a way for couples to end their marriage in a fair and peaceful manner, rather than resorting to annulment or separation. The Philippines is currently one of the few countries in the world that does not have a divorce law. This means that even if a couple wants to end their marriage, they cannot legally do so. As a result, many couples resort to annulment, which is a legal process that declares a marriage void. However, annulment is a costly and lengthy process that not everyone can afford. Furthermore, annulment does not always address the root cause of the breakdown of a marriage. Divorce would provide an alternative for couples who have exhausted all other options for resolving their differences. It would give them a chance to move on with their lives and start anew. Divorce would be a more efficient and cost-effective solution compared to annulment. Annulment is a costly and lengthy process that not everyone can afford. Divorce would provide a more affordable and faster option for couples who want to end their marriage. Divorce would provide a more realistic solution for broken marriages. Annulment does not always address the root cause of the breakdown of a marriage, and it does not take into account the emotional and psychological toll that a broken marriage can take on the couple and their children. Divorce would allow couples to face the reality of their situation and move on with their lives. Moreover, legalizing divorce would also provide a more equitable solution for couples who wish to end their marriages. Currently, annulment proceedings tend to favor the wealthier party, as they can afford the high fees and legal representation required to navigate the process. Legalizing divorce would level the playing field, providing a more accessible solution for couples of all socio-economic backgrounds. In conclusion, I believe that legalizing divorce in the Philippines would be a fair and realistic solution for couples who have irreconcilable differences and cannot continue their marriage. It would provide them with an alternative to annulment, which is a costly and lengthy process. Divorce would also be a more efficient and cost-effective solution, and would provide a more realistic solution for broken marriages.
