Solubility and Acid/Base Chemistry of Organic Compounds II. Objective: To dissolve various organic compounds in different solvents, and adding acids and bases to the compounds in order to determine the solubility/acid-base properties of the organic compounds. III. In Experimental Part I, benzoic acid was placed in ether and water. It dissolved in the ether, but did not dissolve in water. When HCl was added to the dissolved benzoic acid, no reaction occurred, but when NaOH was added to the dissolved benzoic acid, a reaction occurred. In Experimental Part II, sodium benzoate was placed in ether and water. It dissolved in water, but did not dissolve in the ether. Both HCl and NaOH were added to different vials of the dissolved sodium benzoate. No reaction occurred with the aqueous NaOH, but a reaction did occur with the aqueous HCl. In Experimental Part III, azobenzene was placed in water and ether, dissolving only in ether. Then, HCL and NaOH were added to two different vials of the dissolved azobenzene. A reaction did not occur in either vial. In Experimental Part IV, m-nitroaniline was placed in two different vials containing ether and water. The m-nitroaniline dissolved in the ether, but not in the water. Then, HCl and NaOH were added to two different vials of the dissolved m-nitroaniline. The vial with NaOH had no reaction, but the vial with HCl had a reaction. IV. Experimental Part I Part A (Ether) Questions for Step 1 Does benzoic acid dissolve or not dissolve in ether? Explain. Yes, benzoic acid dissolves in ether. You can tell that it does because all the benzoic acid particles went into solution with the ether when mixed. This is because both benzoic acid and ether are nonpolar. Questions for Step 2 Should a reaction have occurred? No If no reaction should have occurred, explain why. No reaction occurred because it is an acid-acid reaction, which won’t happen. Questions for Step 3 Should a reaction have occurred? Yes If so, show the overall reaction. If a reaction should have occurred, what layer (ether or water) is the product dissolved in? Explain your answer. It is dissolved in the water layer, because of the Na+ and O- ions, which make it polar and therefore easy to dissolve in the polar water solvent. Part B (Water) Questions for Step 1 Does benzoic acid dissolve or not dissolve in water? Explain. Benzoic acid does not dissolve in water, which you can tell because the benzoic acid crystals did not go into solution upon shaking. This is because benzoic acid is nonpolar, while water is polar. Experimental Part II Part A (Ether) Questions for Step 1 Does sodium benzoate dissolve or not dissolve in ether? Explain. It does not dissolve in ether, which you can tell because the particles didn’t go into solution. This is because sodium benzoate is polar, while ether is nonpolar. Part B (Water) Questions for Step 1 Does sodium benzoate dissolve or not dissolve in water? Explain. It dissolves in water, because both substances are polar. Questions for Step 2 Should a reaction have occurred? No If no reaction should have occurred, explain why. Sodium benzoate is a salt, and salts do not react with bases. Does precipitation occur? No, because no reaction occurs. Questions for Step 3 Should a reaction have occurred? Yes If so, show the overall reaction. Does precipitation occur? If so, explain why precipitation occurs. Precipitation does occur, because NaCl is formed, which is a solid, so it would precipitate. Experimental Part III Part A (Ether) Questions for Step 1 Does azobenzene dissolve or not dissolve in ether? Explain. Yes, it does dissolve in ether because azobenzene is a neutral compound, so it will dissolve in nonpolar ether.
