Potential CIS 497 Project Proposal Client Name: Jeff Landry Date: Nov. 30, 2006 Client’s Organization: USA’s SCIS Mentor Name: Jeff Landry Potential Project Name: Online Vocabulary Project Need for the Project: The client is a professor who helps students muddle through >100 IT vocabulary terms for a mid-term quiz. His goal is 100% mastery of the terminology as a building block to higher levels of learning in his IS strategy and policy course. In the past, he has used a competitive mid-term vocabulary tournament, consisting of games between teams in a round-robin format. The tournament was a fun way to assist in mid-term preparation. Non-playing teams served as scorekeepers and moderators. By the end of the tournament, we learned that more studying was needed. Automating the tournament will make it easier to organize and play; allow for more coverage of terms; ensure a fair competition; reduce mistakes; and make it more fun, thereby improving the learning experience. Main Project Deliverables: A completed, tested, deployed, and client-accepted information system that implements a competitive vocabulary game played among teams in a course. This system should probably be web browser-based and use Visual Studio with MS-SQL-Server database and good, n-tiered, architectural design. Dr. Pardue has agreed to host the application on his server. Project Sales Pitch: For the student team implementing the project, benefits will be practicing the style of enterprise information systems development that they learned in the object-oriented, database programming sequence of courses (CIS 120/121/324, ITE 285, ITE 370/ISC 361) with a client who will use the application for real in future courses, and a mentor with an interest in good interface design, good testing, good project management practice and student success.
