Kate Bell Com 351 – Winter 2009 Com 351 – Interviewing: Principles and Practices 75 Points Due Feb. 9 Probing Interview Assignment This assignment is designed to give you an opportunity to conduct one or more real-life interviews outside of the classroom. You have flexibility in deciding how to approach this assignment because you choose one of two options, select a specific topic, devise an appropriate schedule of questions, select interviewees and conduct the interview(s). Focus: Your interview should be one or two probing interviews conducted to obtain career or other information. Goals: This assignment emphasizes the following skills: structuring an interview, using primary & secondary questions, developing an interview guide, listening, and practising appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication. Grading: This assignment is worth 75 points. Due Date: Your completed project is due no later than the beginning of class Monday, Feb. 9. Projects turned in late will be subject to a grade reduction of 10 points per day. You are welcome to hand in the assignment early. Contact #: Please record your interviews and include a contact number for your interviewees. I reserve the right to make random calls to interviewees in my assessment of the quality of the projects. You’ll need to let your interviewees know that I might be calling. Proofread: Grammar, spelling and typos are an important component of this assignment. Each such error will cost you one point to a maximum of 10. Do not rely solely on the spell checker; it will not catch errors such as “there” for “their.” Have someone else proofread your paper after you have spell-checked and proofed it yourself. Note: 1. You may not interview someone you know, such as a significant other, relative, personal friend, close colleague etc. Please check with me before you go ahead. 2. Record your interview(s) for evaluation purposes as necessary. 3. Use 12-pt. font, Times, New Roman. One-inch margins. The Assignment 1. Choose one of the following options, depending on which you feel will provide the most valuable information and experience for you. Option 1: Conduct a single in-depth interview lasting 30-45 minutes. This option is best when you’re dealing with an expert who is willing to submit to an interview of considerable length. Examples: The interview/training experience of a college recruiter. A typical day in the life of a sales representative, journalist, realtor etc. Option 2: Conduct two interviews with a minimum of 15 minutes each. This option is best when you want two or more opinions or reactions to a question or topic. Examples: Labor-management strategies. Career options in a particular field, such as public relations, advertising or journalism. 2. Write an 8-10 page paper, double-spaced, on your interview experience. The paper should consist of three parts, each of which is necessary to receive a grade. A brief introduction and conclusion for Parts I and II would be appropriate. A standard introduction and conclusion would be appropriate for the short essay in Part III. Part I: Reflections on the Interview Experience In this section please address the following questions (in whatever order is most logical for your particular interview): i. Which interview option did you choose? a) What was your motivation for choosing this option? b) How did you hope to use the information you gathered? c) Who did you interview? Why? d) Where and when did you conduct the interview(s)? e) What, if any, unforeseen problems occurred? How did you handle them? ii. What research did you do for the interview? a) What resources did you consult (be very specific)? b) What did you learn from your research? iii.
