MA 201 Mathematics Project: Student Presentations and Evaluation, Study Guides, Projects, Research of Mathematics

The details of a mathematics project for ma 201 students, including presentation dates, goals, group formation, presentation structure, evaluation criteria, and peer mentor assessment. Students are expected to make quality oral presentations about mathematics covered in the course, relate the material to the classroom, and be creative. Presentations will be evaluated based on the quality of the oral presentation, preciseness and mathematical correctness, applicability to the classroom, and creativity. Each student will also assess a peer's presentation and receive 30 points towards the project based on the assessment.

Download MA 201 Mathematics Project: Student Presentations and Evaluation and more Study Guides, Projects, Research Mathematics in PDF only on Docsity! PROJECT MA 201 When: Student presentations will be given on Oct. 26, 31 and Nov. 2. Project: The goals of this exercise emphasize the quality of the mathematics and are based on the NCTM standards. They are: 1. For students to begin to learn to work on mathematics collaboratively in groups 2. For each student in MA 201 to make a quality oral presentation about some part of mathematics covered in the course 3. For students to begin to think about mathematics both independently and as part of a group 4. For students to begin to learn to write about mathematics 5. To acquaint the students with some journals and articles in the literature which are mathematics content based 6. For students to present ideas with a conceptual emphasis. Groups: There will be 5 groups formed partly by the instructor. You will be given an opportunity to form your own groups by signing up for specific topics. To make sure the class is evenly distributed between groups, I will rearrange the groups as necessary. Presentation Day: Presentations will not have a combined time to present. Instead, each member of the group must make an oral presentation of at least five minutes ( In addition, there will be NO paper in addition to the presentation. Thus, it is expected that the presentations be as flawless and complete as possible.) Class members are expected to attend class whether or not their group is presenting. Missing class (in full or in part) will result in a reduction of 5 points per missed class from your overall grade for the presentation assignment. I will be monitoring attendance on the week of presentations. The presentation: The group will decide how to structure its presentation (remembering that everyone must speak). The audience for the presentation is the members of your MA 201 class and your purpose is to explain the material in your section to your fellow students. The presentations will be evaluated as follows: 1. Quality of the oral presentation as a presentation (20points) 2. Preciseness and mathematical correctness (20 points) 3. Applicability to the classroom-did you relate the material to what you would expect to see in K-8? (20 points) (This is not the same as presenting it school children) 4. Creativity-did you bring something to the presentation other than what was in the article or book? (10 points) Peer Mentor Assessment Assignment: Each person (A) will be paired up with someone from another group (B) before the presentations begin. Person A will be asked to review Person B’s presentation using the criterion in the list above. Then Person A will type a 1-2 page assessment of Person (B)’s presentation and turn it in to the teacher. Note that the assessment will not affect Person B’s group presentation grade. Person B’s assessment (both given and received) will be treated (and graded) 30 points towards the project. Honesty, respect, and constructive criticism are a few expectations to have here. Scoring: The presentation is worth 15% of your total grade. Additional Info: Your individual grade will be based on the presentation of the group as well as the individual, and on the peer assessment. If you believe someone in your group is not performing, please let me know via e-mail. 1 September 25, 2006
