Running head: PROJECT SCOPE & CHARTER 1 Project Scope & Charter Chamberlain College of Nursing NR631: Nurse Executive Concluding Graduate Experience Dr. Davis November 2018 PROJECT SCOPE & CHARTER 2 This writer believes one of the most important aspects of planning a project is the actual plan itself. Without a plan, a project can become misled, pointlessly consuming funds and endangering the triple constraints, which include limits, restrictions, and barriers that prevent the project from achieving its goals and objectives (Sipes, 2016). This is project is based on a new facility start up, with Nursing Supervisors who do not have the appropriate documents and processes in place. The scope of the issue is the Nursing Supervisors do not have experience in a new start up and need leadership and support from another Nursing Supervisor from a sister facility (see Appendix A). Evidence-based practice (EBP) focuses on research outcomes, quality improvement statistics, and professional opinion to identify the different approaches and procedures in the search for improvement. This is used to close the space between the research being conducted and the practice (Strategies for Nurse Managers, 2018). Starting a new facility requires leadership that is willing to communicate appropriately with their staff to be guided into success (see Appendix B). Leaders that engaged in strategic behaviors focused on planning, organizing, and aligning proved to be vision-focused and systems-oriented (Stetler, Ritchie, Rycroft-Malone & Charns, 2014). Leaders must set an atmosphere with EBP components seeking to guide, educate, and promote EBP-related behavior by managers and staff. They should also recognize and reinforce EBP behaviors in performance evaluations to accomplish the goal of being successful in their new positions (Stetler et al., 2014). One of the most important aspects in patient centered care is achieved during handoff. The discussion of incomplete and imprecise patient information during handoff can result in poor patient outcomes. Communication is the starting point for safety and success because patient handoffs are initiated at different times and involve a variety of healthcare professionals. PROJECT SCOPE & CHARTER 5 Appendix A: Scope Statement Organization’s Name: Palm Point Behavioral Health Project’s Name: Development of Nursing Supervisors Education, Plan, and Implantation Project Manager: Jennifer Hammil-Robbins Sponsor(s), Title: Loretta Beorlegui Organizational Priority (High, Medium, Low): High ______________________________________________________________________ Mission Statement: The mission at Palm Point Behavioral Health is to be a customer- focused organization lead by highly competent professionals who are devoted to patients, families, and the surrounding communities we aid by providing excellent behavioral healthcare that guarantees the safety and dignity of all while strengthening the welfare of those who entrust us with their care. Measureable Project Objectives – (Use 5 W’s and H. Sipes, 2016): Over the next three weeks I will develop & implement nursing supervisor tools using EBP to capture & communicate information between shifts & evaluate communication improvement through daily Flash meetings with the Nursing Supervisors, CNO, CEO, Director of Admissions, and Risk Manager for feedback. Within two weeks I will develop a nursing supervisor guide to improve communication efficiency between shifts using clearly defined processes, guidelines, and documents, which will be reviewed by the CNO prior to implementation. Over the next 8 weeks apply professional values of the Human Science of Caring by Jean Watson when addressing cultural diversity & learning styles when preparing & presenting the final project by meeting with CNO of facility twice weekly & discuss challenges, needs, & ways for improvement. Within the next two weeks I will create audits, checklists, and supervisor report sheets for the Nursing supervisors, these forms will be placed in a binder and will also be added to a shared drive once the documents are reviewed and approved by the CNO prior to implementation. Justification of Project: PROJECT SCOPE & CHARTER 6 This is a new facility start up, with Nursing Supervisors who do not have the appropriate documents and processes in place. The scope of the issue is the Nursing Supervisors do not have experience in a new start up and need leadership and support from another Nursing Supervisor from a sister facility. No current change is needed; just a foundation where they are able to be educated and be successful in their new positions. Implementation Strategy:  Meeting with Nursing Supervisors  Develop communication and documents  Determining competency level of Nursing Supervisors  Provide direct observation by working shifts  Continued assessment of the overall process  Provide education and direction to the Nursing Supervisors  Determine efficiency of the processes  Evaluate changes that essential to the successfulness of the project Project Resources – Human and Technical: The human resources needed for this project in order for it to be successful are going to include the Nursing Supervisors hours required to understand and implement the new process, including the hours of the CNO, and project manager regarding constant education and support. The physical aspect is based on the actual creating of the new documents and processes needed for the start up of the company. The technical aspect will be focused on uploading documents to the shared drive. The project has a limited financial aspect due to the overall cost being related to binders, paper supplies, and education time spent with the Nursing Supervisors and other pertinent staff. Completion Date: December 20, 2018 Measures of Success – Include all Metrics: Nursing Supervisors are successful in the implementation of the new documents and processes, auditing efficiently, handoff and communication shift by shift is effective, and be open to re-education as observed by the CNO and project manager. Assumptions: All Nursing Supervisors will understand handoff communication, appropriate use of documentation, be able to work together as a team to be successful in their new positions, and be willing to request for assistance and direction when needed. PROJECT SCOPE & CHARTER 7 Constraints:  Non-compliance from the Nursing Supervisors regarding the utilization of the new documents and processes  Nursing Supervisors unwilling to be proactive and use their knowledge and experience as nurses  Documents and audits being incomplete, inefficient, and not effectively utilized making the process unsuccessful APPROVALS Print or Type Name Signature Date Project Manager Approval: Jennifer Hammil-Robbins 11/7/18 Owner or Sponsor Title and Approval: Loretta Beorlegui 11/7/18
