Psych 101 Psychological Disorders Abnormality - Any behavior that is not part of the average Abnormality as a deviation from the ideal - when any behavior deviates from the standard of the culture. Abnormality as a personal sense of discomfort - when the behavior causes stress, anxiety or quilt. Abnormality as the inability to function effectivly - when people are not able to function effectively or meet the demands of society. Abnormality as a legal concept - What the law considers insane (the term insane is a legal term and varies from place to place) Medical perspective( on abnormality) - a doctor should eb able to find symptoms for abnormal behavior ie. hormonal imbalance or brain injury. Psychoanalytic Perspective (on Abnormality) - Freudian beliefs. the abnormal behavior stems from childhood conflicts. Specifically over opposing wishes in regards to sex and aggression. Behavioral perspective( on abnormality) - the behavior problem stems in response from a stimuli you have previously learned. Cognitive perspective (on abnormality) - a persons thoughts and beliefs are central to their behavior. (in order to get passed this a person must learn new adaptive ways of thinking) Humanistic perspective(on abnormality) - the responsibility people have to their own behavior even if it is abnormal. How people view themselves in relationship to others and where they see themselves in the world. Sociocultural perspective(on abnormality) - how a persons behavior where normal or abnormal is shaped by the kind of family, society, or culture they belong to. Diagnostic Statistical Manual edition 5 (DSM-5) - How abnormal behavior is classified. The "bible" for diagnosing disorders Axis I - DSM-5 The clinical disorders. Produce stress and impair function. ie. anxiety, depression, bipolar, schizophrenia Axis II - DSM-5 personality disorders and mental retardation. * often appear in childhood or adolescent. Axis III - DSM-5 general medical conditions. Physical disorders that may be related to psychological disorders. ie. catatonic schizophrenia. Axis IV - DSM-5 Psychological and environmental problems. Problems in a persons life such as stress or life events that may affect the diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of psychological disorders. Axis V - Major depression - 15 million people in the US have this and it is mostly Female. Mania - Mood disorder an extended state of intense elation or happiness. Constant high, feel intense power, invulnerability, happiness, and endless energy. Bipolar - Mood Disorder bouts of mania and then bouts of depression. swing between the 2 for period of days, months or even years. depressive episodes often last longer than manic episodes. Schizophrenia - severe distortion of reality. peoples thinking perception and emotion may deteriorate so severely they become social withdrawn. Hallucinations, delusions, word salad are all common symptoms. Over time its not so clear cut because these symptoms blend together. without medication it gets progressively worse but is treatable with medication. Personality Disorders - maladaptive behavior patterns that keep people from function properly in society. often unaware something i wrong. live normal lives until something dramatic happens. This includes antisocial personality, borderline personality, and narcissistic personality disorders. Antisocial personality disorder - Personality Disorder do not follow the rules of society. No regard for what is morally or ethically acceptable. extremely manipulative and often impulsive. Borderline personality disorder - Personality disorder difficulty in developing who they are. these people rely on relationships with others to define them. normally develop one-sided relationships very quickly. do not handle rejection or breakups well. Narcissistic personality disorder. - has exaggerated sense of how important they are. expect a certain type of treatment from other people yet they themselves disregard other peoples feelings. comorbidity - occurrence of two or more disorders at the same time
