Psychology Statistics Midterm Review Part 2 H0: ρ = 0 - This means that there is no correlation in the population HA: ρ ≠ 0 - This means that there is a correlation in the population Normal distribution - histogram or frequency distribution that is a unimodal, symmetrical, and bell-shaped Asymptotic - the tails come closer and closer to the horizontal axis, but never touch Haphazard selection - method of selecting a sample of individuals to study by taking whoever is available or happens to be first on a list This method of selection can result in a sample that is not representative of the population. Random selection - method of choosing a sample in which each individual in the population has an equal chance of being selected e.g., using a random number table Sample - the part of the population about which you actually have information Population - entire set of things of interest Probability - the basis for the normal distribution and the foundation of inferential statistics. Expected relative frequency - number of successful outcomes divided by the number of total outcomes you would expect to get if you repeated an experiment a large number of times Outcome - term used for discussing probability for the result of an experiment Hypothesis testing - A systematic procedure for deciding whether the results of a research study supports a hypothesis that applies to a population Effect size - It is a measure of the difference between populations; how much something changes after a specific intervention; indicates the extent to which two populations do not overlap One-tailed tests - More powerful Two-tailed tests - tests make it harder to get significance on any one tail Statistical power - is the probability that the study will produce a statistically significant result if the research hypothesis is true. Null hypothesis -
