Learn about the current challenges facing the protein structure prediction field Introduction: Predicting protein structure is probably the single most important problem in computational biology (in our opinion!) It is also one of the most difficult. We have covered some basic aspects of protein structure prediction during lecture, and you have run some structure prediction software during lab. This homework will give you the opportunity to learn more about current methods and challenges in predicting protein structure. The paper by Ginalski et al. (Nucleic Acids Res. 2005, 33:1874-91, part of your assigned reading) provides a good overview of protein structure prediction methods and evaluation of predicted structures. Your assignment is to write a summary of this paper. Your summary must include discussion of each of the three major sections of the paper: 1. Protein structure prediction methods 2. Evaluation of prediction methods 3. Utility of protein structure predictions As part of your summary, include a description of: a. the aspect paper that interested you the most and b. the part of the paper that you found most confusing Your summary must be at least 1 page long, but not more than 2 pages, using Times New Roman 12 pt font. Don’t worry if you don’t understand all of the paper. As always, if you have questions, feel free to ask your TAs or Dr. Dobbs or other class members.
