Physics 199esp Assignment 1 Due 3-Mar-09 Find one example of pseudoscience in popular culture. Describe how it’s presented and whether or not there is any skeptical consideration in the presentation. The example you provide can come from any of the following sources: • Television • Radio • Newspapers • Magazines • Web* If you choose an example from TV or radio, then you should briefly describe what you saw or heard, then discuss what about it was pseudoscience (or just plain garbage). If you choose an example from a newspaper or magazine, submit the article plus your written assessment of the article. Sources from the web are accessible provided they are not personal sites or blogs. The example does not have to be a news report, you can choose a television show (provided that it is meant to be nonfictional) or an advertisement. In all cases, you are to describe the material that was presented, followed by your critique of the presentation. What were the claims? Was it biased? Did it give you all of the information you need to make an informed choice? What was taken for granted? What were the assumptions? Limit your description and conclusions to one page. If you chose an example from print media or the web, you can also submit the actual example.
