MET 1000, Dr Simin Nasseri Spring 2009 Recycled Design Project: Creative Design at Minimum Cost Objectives  Design a machine, mechanism, tool, or any useful object or device.  Plan for building the object by gathering some information about the materials you use and the requirements for producing a helpful and practical object.  Consider many options and choose the best one.  Sketch, use measuring devices, estimate the forces involved (if any) and all other important factors in this creative design.  Build your project using recycled materials.  Estimate cost.  Prepare a Gantt chart using MS Excel and show all the tasks involved. Estimate time of reproducing the same product.  Summarize results in a brief report (include all the sketches, designs, calculations, final design, Gantt chart, etc). Performance Expectations  Instructors will evaluate student teams and individual students on the project; the evaluation will include understanding of creative problem-solving and teaming skills, cost, usefulness of the device, appearance, etc.  Students will have opportunities for self-evaluation, peer evaluation, and team evaluation.  Individual instructors will test and grade students.  The student project and short report will be evaluated and graded by the Faculty team. ASSIGNMENT PROJECT #1 RECYCLED DESIGN PROJECT Design a machine, mechanism, tool or any useful device using recycled materials such as plastic, cardboard, aluminum can, glass, etc. Determine its size, shape, and the type of products that will be used. Explain the process you used to create your object. Use various measuring devices and mathematical calculations for size, endurance, etc. Investigate related recycling opportunities, for example, companies that are making similar recycled products. Estimate the cost of the finished product and the time it took to make it. Plot a Gantt chart. HEADING Prepare a title page for your short report: MET 1000 Design Project Recycled Design Project: Creative Design at Minimum Cost Professor: Dr Simin Nasseri Designer(s): Your name(s) DATE: 30 March 2009 INTRODUCTION Describe problem in a short introductory paragraph. BODY 1. Write a body paragraph with the content needed to describe your creation. 2. Describe all the options which were developed during this design process. 3. Explain the design process: shape and size of your mechanism, which recycled materials were used, and how it was assembled. o You either state that you would like to use a specific material(s), eg scrap metals and write as many ideas as you can find for the useful objects made of this specific material. You choose one and you explain how it would be manufactured (screws, soldering, welding, etc). or o You start with a device in mind. You explore the possibility of using many different recycled materials (Glass, cardboard, Aluminum cans, scrap metals, plastics, etc). You analyze the problem and then you choose the material(s) and you explain how the part is built. 4. Tell which measuring devices and mathematical formulas were used and for what reasons. 5. Show any calculations used. 6. Describe any similar recycling opportunities that are currently being used. 7. List estimated cost and time to reproduce the product. You may want to attach sketches, jpeg photos, etc., of the actual product at various stages of production. CONCLUSION Write a paragraph or two telling what you learned from this project. A picture of your project
