In what specific ways can you enhance your ability to communicate with people from diverse cultures? (10 pts.) As the globalization in the world increases, cultural diversity in the workplace has become a phenomenon. Cultural diversity arises when differences in ethnicity, language, race, nationality, sexual orientation and religion are reflected within a group. It is about acknowledging and respecting people’s differences and recognizing that everyone is special. Communicating with people from diverse cultures is also considered as barriers. For instance, “A foreigner visited a place where T’boli tribes lived and he finds hard time to communicate and understand.” Another example is in a business industry, “When a businessman negotiates from South Korea. The both parties can’t directly communicate and it needs an interpreter to fully understand their negotiation.” However, these problem can be address. And these can be enhanced or improved when communicating with people from diverse culture. One of the specific ways to enhanced your ability to communicate is, when talking or start a conversation, you must have a presence of mind who are you’re talking to. The word sensitivity is also important because the word that coming out from your mouth or the action that you portray is okay to you but for them its prohibited and later on they feel awkward. Also, when you visited a place, you must know, learn and understand their cultures first before you enter their place. By simply reading or asking the people that truly know them. By learning how to greet them or by asking the do’s and don’ts. In addition, communicating people with diverse culture is not a hindrance to share your thoughts or feelings. These can be a beneficial to everyone because interacting with different people from diverse cultures can make you realize that everything that you do is not good and it has a limitation. 2. “Human beings draw close to one another by their common nature, but habits and customs keep them apart.” (Confucius) Do you agree or disagree? Give concrete situations to support your stand. (10 pts.) I agree that human beings draw close to one another by their common nature, but habits and customs keep them apart. We lived in one planet and we united by our common nature. We all have our own identities. As a person grows, our interaction with the environment has a significant influence on the development of our own personality. Also, we keep apart because of our habits and customs. For instance, the religion, we all have a different religion but one person talks about their religion that might contradict to the other religion may result misunderstanding and later on it will to conflict. Also, when an individual grows and know what they’re desired then that their point of view in life is changed because of what they’re seen the reality in environment. The only thing to avoid misunderstanding and conflict is to have a respect. Respect they’re point of view in life, they’re habits, desired because at the end of the day, our common nature will bind and unite us regardless of our differences. Activity 4. Answer the question: 1. Why is it important to use appropriate varieties and registers of language in certain communication contexts? (10 pts.) Language is the main mode of communication. It is through language communication, spoken or written, that we are able to share our thoughts, opinions, and emotions with another person. There are six types of varieties in language register. These registers can be use based on the environment and the people we meet. It is necessary to use an appropriate varieties and languages registers in communication context because of different situations and people call for different registers. This indicates the level of decorum and casualness of the language used. When we use the correct varieties and register of language, we show reverence, interest, comfortableness and professionalism. However, we have different technique in language register when it comes to face-to-face communication and in written mode. We also defined face-to-face conversation as multimodality, so we may use various registers and recognize the status, position or the way of living of the person to communicate with in order to understand when and where to use or drop the formality. When writing a paper, since the construction of sentences, we usually use the formal register, the correction of grammar and proper use of words really matter.
