Fariñas 12-St. Barbara Politics and Poverty during Covid 19 It has one of the toughest and longest lockdowns in the whole world. Philippines is considered one of the countries that has been affected the most by the COVID-19 pandemic. In terms of economics, Philippine has been hit by the pandemic and suffered tremendously just like the other country. Because of lockdowns, the economic activities was almost a standstill and taxpayers relief efforts. Due to this, the projected revenue of the government’s collection is much lower compared to the previous years. Around 10 million Filipinos have lost their jobs temporarily or even permanently due to business closure caused by the pandemic. Urban poor communities over Metro Manila don’t have sufficient support to manage the coronavirus widespread. They claimed that they are already having a hard time and lives have worsened with no means to support themselves in this time of public health crisis. The ultra-strict measures of quarantine have left more than 5 million Filipinos hungry. In order to survive, some of them were picking vegetables scrap. It may be embarrassing but they said they need to eat first rather than to think how to save their faces in public. When a crisis like this hits an equal society like the Philippines, it’s amplifying the inequality in the society. In that case, the poor are bearing the brunt of an equal distribution of the impacts of this crisis. As the Philippines economy is crashing into its worst recession in decades, the country’s poor people were having difficulties pulling themselves out of the crushing poverty. In my own observations, considering that I am also experiencing the crisis in this pandemic, I really agree that effective leadership plays a significant role in providing solutions to the needs of the people in our society. Recognizing that a company faces a crisis is the primary thing leaders must do. It may be a difficult step, particularly amid the onset of crisis that do not arrive all of a sudden but develop out of recognizable circumstances that veils their nature. Once leaders recognize a crisis as such, they can start to mount a response. But they cannot respond as they would in a routine crisis, by taking after plans that had been drawn up in progress.
