Tolentino, Jerome Ethics 3AR6 Reflection Paper: GATTACA The movie takes place in a dystopian reality where humans have predetermined traits when they are born. This would segregate them to jobs according to those traits causing a divide between those with the ideal traits (Valid) as opposed to those who have not (Invalid). Discrimination between the two classes of people were prevalent in this society because your genetics would dictate your social status. In relation to the philosophy, the movie would go against its values. In Existentialism, Sartre states that existence, precedes essence. Essence of a person would define who they are as a person based on the choices that they make in life. In the movie, in a way, humans were given essence once they were born. Because of the traits that were given to them, they would need to follow a set path based on the genetics that they have – eliminating the freedom of choice. In a way this would also contradict the values of existentialism as society would have already decided what you would do in life as oppose to what you want to choose to be.
