ELT5-WO4 Reflection Paper about K to 12 curriculum One manifestation under the K to 12 program is the K to 12 language curriculum in the subject area of MTB-MLE or Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education. This curriculum is newly released in the companion of K to 12 program which is implemented in the basic education in grades 1, 2, and 3 to preserve the culture, to develop the confidence of the students, to help to become more effective in the teaching and leaming process as well as to serve as the foundation to students in learning other languages. MTB-MLE have its different components or aspects that are very informative and organize and with that, | think the remarkable components for me is the kind of leamers does MLE intend to produce wherein learners should become multi-literate, multilingual, and multicultural because when learners have this kind of abilities | think it helps to address the functional illiteracy of every Filipino and it will become a great help for them in every aspect. This mother-tongue curriculum has a good intention and goals for every learner and the strengths of this are the benefits and the stages of the MLE program. It is because the benefits of MLE helps students in learning and enjoying school while the stage of the MLE program helps the learning of the students in a systematic way to develop the good transition of every language to them. However, behind those strengths of the mother-tongue curriculum, it also has its weaknesses and | think those are the aspects of scaffolding and materials needed to support MTB-MLE. It is when sometimes some teachers tend to fail in scaffolding the students and the transitions of every language are not developing equally. They are also problematic in teaching MTB-MLE to students because of lack of materials, as we all know most of the materials in teaching are in the medium of English language. On the flip side, MTB-MLE has an impact on ESL teaching and learning because the leamer's mother-tongue language or the ability to use their first language really helps a second or third language, as | have said earlier it serves as a foundation
