Kevin Teel The BA 352’s Reflection Paper #2 My strongest emotional intelligence competency is Social Awareness. As a leader I will find myself working with people who have different personality types. I will best be able to use this competency to show empathy in the work environment. This emotional intelligence will help me to understand the feelings of people around me and I will know better how to treat them. Social awareness will help me to gain credibility within an organization and to offer better service to clients. In contrast Self awareness is my weakest emotional intelligence. There are two things that I can do to improve in this area. First, I can spend more time pondering my feelings and see how they affect my actions. Second, I can watch to see how my moods and emotions affect others. As I do these things I will gain more self awareness. The leadership style that I use most often is the affiliative style. More than anything I feel that a peaceful work environment is important in order to have a productive work environment. According to Goleman the affiliative style believes this to be the case because friends trust friends. I also dislike having more structure than is necessary. My feeling is that people can work more effectively when they are given direction then are allowed to find their own means. At the same time I do like fundamental structure and organization, to keep common goals as the focus. This shows that I also use the authoritative leader style, which Goleman says is a compliment to the affiliative style. My emotional intelligence lends itself to this style of leadership. My emotional intelligence, and preferred leadership style, also relates to my Student Leadership Practices Inventory assessment. Modeling the way, and enabling others to act are my strengths as assessed in the SLPI. My top ranked leadership practice, modeling the way, may sound like the pace setter style. I prefer to show people how I do things as an example and let them discover what works best for them. This shows my dislike for unnecessary structure on the means by which employees get their work done. Enabling others to act is a leadership practice that requires the ability to personalize the relationship, and help them to feel confident in themselves. This is what the affiliative style leader is best at. It is evident that there is a relationship between emotional intelligence, leadership style, and leadership practices.
