Reflection Paper Unit VIII Columbia Southern University Reflection Paper Unit VIII Having the proper knowledge and understanding of sociological theories and concepts, such as sociological imagination, elements of culture, and social institutions help positively impact an individual’s life. By accurately knowing how an individual’s life may be shape or influenced by these concepts or theories, improves one’s navigation through different scenarios during personal, work and community interactions. As we come across different types of cultures, upbringings, and beliefs, these concepts provide a better understanding of why some people react or behave differently to same circumstances. Furthermore, it helps move from the self-thinking sphere towards a more caring and willing to comprehend other’s perspectives and points of views. Likewise, it aids in creating a more cohesive and educated approach while interacting with people of different backgrounds. Through this class I was able to get a better understanding how elements of culture and social institution play an important role in shaping a person’s life. This new knowledge has become useful when trying to work on a project where perspectives and views may collide depending on the diversity of individuals involve. I have taken it as an opportunity to learn more about them and where they are coming from, rather than just trying to impose my own ideas; this has helped building stronger work relationships. Likewise, learning about norms and how they may vary from one culture to another, has helped broadening my views and not automatically categorized an individual as rude or uncaring without attempting to comprehend what they meant with their actions of words. This highlighted the importance of families in society and not just as providing a safe place but also in creating functional individuals in hopes to prepare them for society. Sociological imagination when it comes to workplace was a moment of enlightenment as I never thought it would shape a person’s life. However, after further consideration I could see if a person is at a workplace where growth is not encouraged, that person may not seek professional growth at all. They may get burned out and stop liking what they do or just continue in position for the wrong reasons. According to Witt (2018), socialization happens throughout our lifespan. Beginning at home where basic skills are learned, then at school where those skills are put to practice with those outside our nuclear or extended families. New skills are learned as we interact with other from different backgrounds than ours. This showcases the importance of agents of socialization in providing the necessary skills for adult life in society. Knowing the differences between folkways and mores, aid us in conducting ourselves in a way that is respectful, encouraged, and accepted withing the many groups we belong. Economic and Political Weekly (2012) stated Mill’s sociological imagination has now expanded to legal imagination as legal issues become apparent in a fight for civil, political, and socioeconomic rights. This article explains how those fighting for social and economic rights seek understanding under the standard of equality, whereas those fighting for civil and political rights are based on standards of liberty. Unfortunately, this disparity only gives way to a close thinking and no plausible solutions. Those fighting for equality could argue functionalist perspective would be applicable based on their desire to maintain social order. While those
