Reflexive Pronouns and Present Tense of Reflexive Verbs+Study Notes-Beginning Spanish- S118-9/21/2012 Reflexive Pronouns • A reflexive construction consists of a reflexive pronoun and a verb • Reflexive refers to: myself, yourself, ourselves Yo: me Tu: te Ud./el/ella: se Nosotros: nos Uds/ellos/ellas: se • Reflexive verbs are identified by the pronouns –se attached to the end of the infinitive • To conjugate verbs, use a reflexive pronoun with its corresponding verb form Placing reflexive Pronouns: • Place the pronoun in front of the conjugated verb • When a reflexive is used as an infinitive or as a present participle, place the pronoun either before the conjugation or attach it to the infinitive of the participle • When a reflexive pronoun is attached to a present participle an accent mark is added to maintain the correct stress Example: • Juan Carlos se cepilla los dientes. • Tomas va a lavarse el cabello. Reflexive vs. Nonreflexive Verbs • When the action is performed on another person a reflexive pronoun is not used. Example: • Me despierto a las ocho. • Despierto a mi mama a los ocho.
