REL 3208.1 Religious Diversity in My CommunityREL 320People are generally drawn to others with a similar culture. Our community is diverse in many different aspects. We are all unique individuals and when we recognize our differences and respect them, we can cohesively live together despite our different backgrounds. I just moved to Tennessee just 15 minutes away from Nashville. Nashville is like the gospel music capitol and most people identify as Christian with no Christian faiths making up about 3% of the population according to the Pew Research Center. I found out that though most Tennesseans identify as Christian, other religions are spread through out the state as well. I live in Davidson County and20.6 % of the population identify as Baptist and 15% identify as other Christian faiths. In my community, I noticed many different religious backgrounds such as Muslim and even Buddhist. We all live together and respect our religious preferences. Most of the churches are Baptist but a small group of Methodist and other groups can be found as well. This access allows newcomers like me, to find a new church home when we move. I have not yet found a new church home, but I am looking into it despite the pandemic. I sometime catch services online which are not the same. Moving to a new state and this class made me want to explore new religions because of the religious diversity in Tennessee. After researching, I discovered that religious diversity in Tennessee is decreasing because the new generations continue to reform. Each generation seems to be reforming religion or changing it to apply to all people. Religion plays a large part in our community and though it is said that we are free to practice any religion, our nation is run by Christian values and the bible. In my community we get along because we get along because we understand that for our community to un smoothly we must try to cooperate, understand and respect one another’s religious preferences. It is our constitutional right. Religious diversity allows all to have a sense of identity and belonging, according to Herberg. ( Herberg,pg.41) My preferred religion is Baptist. Growing up I was raised Pentecostal but switched to Baptist shortly after my 19th birthday. I believe that there is one God who created the heavens and the earth. I also believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God. The Baptist denomination has spread in Christian communities all over the world. We believe that Jesus died for our sins on the cross and in return has given us eternal life. We also believe in heaven, hell and the afterlife. It is expected of us to mirror God’s Perfection as far as our everyday life. It is my duty to worship God and help others find a way to him. It is my personal belief that my servitude to him and others will gain me a seat in heaven. We are expected to read our bible and apply its principles to our everyday lives. It amazes me when I think about my religious history. As a black woman, I was taught that my religion is lifestyle. It is not a hat you put on and take off. When the slaves decided to rebel, they provided a way to obtain physical and religious freedom. The “Great Awakening” provided a different point of view when it came to Christianity. People now believed that religion was a choice regardless of what your parents were or identified when you were born. (Neusner, pg. 39). I believe that our religion gives us a sense of belonging in a community. (Herberg, pg.
