Chem 162u, Spring 1999 Report to replace missed laboratory The report replaces a 4-hour laboratory period and a written report. Thus, the work that you put into the report must be significant or you will not receive credit for the laboratory and will not pass the course. Part I. Obtain data from your laboratory partner for the lab you missed and do the data and calculation part of the laboratory report. For those labs with a template you must complete the template. For those without a template complete the appropriate sections of the report form. Part II. Revise the laboratory procedure for the lab you missed to improve it and/or change the focus of the laboratory. Your revision must include the following: 1. Description of three major changes to the procedure. Major changes are chemical or physical changes that significantly impact the lab. Changes such as adding a written exercise are acceptable if you design the exercise. Changing the focus of the lab to apply to another area of science is also acceptable. Completely describe the changes by writing the change as it would appear in the lab manual. 2. Explain your changes. For each change you make describe why the change improves the lab or how it changes the focus of the lab. Including chemical concepts is important in your explanation. 3. Cite a reference for each change that supports the change. Only two of the references can be textbooks or lab manuals. If you use a web site as a reference you must explain how you know that this site is providing reliable information. Report is due one week after laboratory was completed or one week after your return to school if illness is the reason for the missed lab. Grading is based on 1. How your procedure proves your understanding of concepts covered by the lab. 2. How chemically sound your changes are. 3. How your references support your changes.
