Instructions for observing and studying the structures and functions of the male and female reproductive systems through microscopic and gross anatomy. It includes directions for accessing relevant images on the jaydoc histoweb website, sketching and labeling certain structures, and identifying functions of various parts. Both the male and female reproductive systems, discussing the testes, seminiferous tubules, interstitium, epididymis, vas deferens, sperm, bulbourethral gland, ductus or vas deferens, ejaculatory duct, prostate gland, seminal vesicle, testes, urethra, ovary, oviduct, cervix, clitoris, labia majora, labia minora, and vagina.

Download Male and Female Reproductive Systems: Anatomy and Function - Prof. Peggy A. Lopipero-Langm and more Lab Reports Human Biology in PDF only on Docsity! 1 Biology 9 Reproductive System Lab Objectives: • To observe and understand the structures and functions of the male reproductive system • To observe and understand the structures and functions of the female reproductive system PART 1: Male Reproductive System 1. Microscopic Anatomy • Go to the male reproductive system histology page of JayDoc Histoweb at http://www.kumc.edu/instruction/medicine/anatomy/histoweb/male/male.htm. You can also reach the site by using the direct link at the instructor’s web page. The links to the images you are required to view are located on the left side of the screen. Notice that you may need to move the vertical bar dividing the screen to the right in order to see each slide in its entirety. Be sure to at least skim the description for each image so you understand what you are looking at. • View images 1 and 2 of a testis. • View images 3 through 5, and 7 and 8 of the seminiferous tubules. SKETCH a tubule in cross-section as seen in image 4 and be sure to note and LABEL the spermatids that are about to be released into the lumen. • What is the function of the seminiferous tubules? ________________________________________ • View image 6 of the interstitium of the testes. Notice the interstitial cells also called Leydig cells. What is their function? _____________________________________________________________ • Based on your answers to the previous questions you can now state an exocrine and endocrine product of the testes. • View images 15 through 17 of the epididymis. • View images 18 through 20 of the vas deferens. • Fill in the blanks for the duct system and the pathway of sperm from the epididymis: epididymis -> __________________ -> ___________________ -> out of the body • View sperm in image 25. DRAW and LABEL the following parts of a sperm AND state their FUNCTIONS. o head, acrosome, midpiece, tail 2 2. Gross Anatomy of the Male Reproductive System • Utilizing your textbook, the models, and/or the board of the male reproductive system. MATCH and state a FUNCTION of the following structures as indicated in the figure below. o bulbourethral gland _____________________________________________________________ o ductus or vas deferens ___________________________________________________________ o ejaculatory duct ________________________________________________________________ o epididymis ____________________________________________________________________ o prostate gland _________________________________________________________________ o seminal vesicle ________________________________________________________________ o testes ________________________________________________________________________ o urethra _______________________________________________________________________ PART 2: Female Reproductive System 1. Microscopic Anatomy • Go to the female reproductive system histology page of JayDoc Histoweb at http://www.kumc.edu/instruction/medicine/anatomy/histoweb/female/female.htm. You can also reach the site by using the direct link at the instructor’s web page. • View images 1 and 2 of the ovary. • View images 3 through 7 of the developing follicle. SKETCH the Graafian follicle depicted in image 7 and LABEL the oocyte contained within it. • View the corpus luteum in image 8.
