Quoting secondary sources  Analysis of information contained in one or more primary sources.  Quote from secondary sources of three specific reasons:  To display excellence in ideas and expression by the source.  To explain complex material  To set up a statement of your own  Avoid extensive use of direct quotes from secondary sources. 6 Avoiding Plagiarism  Plagiarism is the willful use of another person’s writing or ideas as your own.  It is grounds for failure and academic dismissal from the college.  It can easily be avoided by giving credit to your sources. Avoiding Plagiarism  Crediting chosen sources is major part of writing a research paper.  You give proper credit if you:  Cite the source of the ideas you borrow.  Give proper credit to the speaker of a well- worded quoted phrase or sentence.  Name the authors of the best ideas on a topic that you have summarized.  Acknowledge borrowed material by introducing the quotation or paraphrase with the name of the author. 7 Avoiding Plagiarism  Name the authors of the best ideas on a topic that you have summarized.  Acknowledge borrowed material by introducing the quotation or paraphrase with the name of the author.
