Marylin Monroe: Past, Present, Future A Forever Icon US History 2B June 12, 2019 Marilyn Monroe was, is, and will always be a cultural icon. She became one due to her personality and talent which helped shape the film, beauty, and fashion industry. She remains an icon to Americans today because of the influence she had on the American way of life. Her daring looks, lifestyle, and beliefs continue to charm and inspire people today. Marilyn’s dedication to her work and relationships, helped her grow in not only the Hollywood communities, but in the general population’s hearts as well. Monroe was born Norma Jean Mortensen on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles. She hada difficult childhood. Her mother was mentally unstable; always in and out of a mental institution; while her father was absent her entire life.’ Because of her situation, she was put into foster care. Marilyn passed through a total of twelve foster parents and ended up in an orphanage. At last she was sent to live with her mother’s best friend, Grace. While living with Grace and her husband, Doc, she became a victim of sexual assault. Doc, Grace’s husband allegedly attacked her. She was then sent to live with her great-aunt Olive in California. Again, she was a victim of sexual assault. Olive’s son sexually assaulted her, and she had to move yet again. Marilyn was sent to live with another aunt, Ana Lower, and that is where she found her first husband, James Dougherty.” He was a Los Angeles police officer. A significant event that embodies this, was her accomplishment of being the first woman to get script and director approval in films that she starred in.'* This was a major step in the right direction for the Womens Rights Movement. Along with being a Woman’s Rights activist, she was a civil rights activist as well. She broke the racial barrier with one phone call. Ella Fitzgerald was a jazz singer who wasn’t allowed to perform at big time jazz clubs, but Marilyn fixed that quickly. She personally called the owner of the club and demanded that Ella Fitzgerald to be allowed to perform. Marilyn promised to take a front row seat every mght in exchange, and becauseof this, Ella never had to perform at small jazz clubs and got the fame she deserved. Marilyn continued to perform acts of inclusion and break down civil rights barriers throughout her entire career. She was named a legend for these small acts of kindness that she never knew would eventually affect the United States as a whole. Her legacy continues and will never be forgotten by individuals and entire communities around the entire world. Her prestige was well deserved. The fascination people had with her was for obvious teasons. Marilyn’s looks, smile, the expression in her eyes, the wry, funny, self- aware things she said, the hourglass figure & perfect blonde curls weren’t the only thing that attracted people and gained her respect. Her iconic platinum blonde hair and signature red lipstick, Marilyn Monroe easily had one of the most iconic looks of all time. Her daring looks, lifestyle, and beliefs continue to charm and inspire people today. Marilyn’s dedication to her work and relationships helped her flourish in the hollywood communities.
