ASIATECH os ASIA TECHNOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ARTS NIOR_ HIGH SCHOOL 1 CHAPTER 1: THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND This chapter provides insight on the general problem of the research and on how it came about as the subject of focus by the researchers. This chapter also elaborates on component, questions, and terms to be seen in the research study. INTRODUCTION In the middle of August, dengue cases breached the 80,000 mark, that is 80,745 cases from January 1 to August 18 and 14.14 percent higher compared to the same period last year at 70,745 cases. Deaths from dengue also increased from 424 last year to 496 this year. Majority of the cases continued to be in the National Capital Region (NCR), Central Luzon and CaLaBaRZon. Despite these news, dengue did not end up as the top health news, and in fact became just one of three mosquito-borne diseases in the news this year. Hogging the news limelight with dengue is the disease called "chikungunya". There is no cure for this viral disease. Treatment is focused on relieving the symptoms. Addition to that, The Philippines is the only major producer of calamansi. Calamansi is most widely cultivated in the said nation. It is ASIATECH os ASIA TECHNOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ARTS NIOR_ HIGH SCHOOL 2 primarily grown for its juice extracts. Prized for its fruit and ornamental value, the calamansi is one of the most important citrus species in the Philippines. Its potential lies in its varied uses. Due to its wide-ranging applications, the calamansi is grown on a large-scale in the country. This research is about the feasibility of citrofortunella microcarpa and vitex negundo as components of mosquito repellant candle. The researchers will use extracts from calamansi and lagundi to create and observe the effect this project due to its components that’s able to repel mosquitoes. The resarchers’ procedures and results will serve as the evidence for the success of this research. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Philippines is a tropical country, which means that its average temperature range between 21 °C (70 °F) and 32 °C (90 °F). Which means that mosquitoes appear as early as February or March. But on some parts of the nation, mosquitoes’ activities can be felt until the month of June came or later months of the year. Wherein, studies claim that mosquitoes are one of the most medically major spreaders of parasites and pathogens. This mosquito-borne viral disease called ASIATECH os ASIA TECHNOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ARTS NITOR_ HIGH SCHOOL 5 mosquitoes around the house after adding the Citrofortunella m. juice to the mops and cloths for cleaning (stretchyourpeso, 2015). The purpose of this study is to help the society specially the households, to prevent such diseases like dengue that would basically come from mosquitoes. Moreover, it could lessen environmental problems in terms of producing a greener nation as it reduces cases of er. A oe . The research paradigm of Input, Process and Output on the significant feasibility of Citrofortunella m. and Vitex n. as components of mosquito repellant candle. ASIATECH os ASIA TECHNOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ARTS NIOR_ HIGH SCHOOL 7 The input shows the components of the experiment which involves the lagundi and calamansi extract, and Sperma Candle being the main component of the mosquito repellant candle. Moreover, the process shows the outline of the experimental run which involves the grating of esperma candle, which would be added by the extracts of lagundi and calamansi. Furthermore, the output shows the target end- product of the experiment. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM This research mainly focuses on creating a scented candle which will repel mosquitoes. The researchers then decided to combine calamansi and lagundi which led to the main problem of the study. ASIATECH ns ASIA TECHNOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ARTS NTOR_ HIGH SCHOOL 10 SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY This study is limited in determining the feasibility of citrofortunella microcarpa and vitex negundo as components of mosquito repellant candle. The subjects that will be included in this research will be Citrofortunella m. (calamansi), and Vitex n. (lagundi). The researchers will also observe other subject matter other than mosquitoes to validate the product's effect and safety. Also, the different ways to repel mosquitoes such as putting the candle beside them, or placing it far away from them, will also be tested to determine the most effective way to use the product. The experiment will be conducted four times to ensure validity of the result. The output that will be produced in this study will only be effective as a mosquito repellant. Other uses such as an alternative to a reliever inhaler are not recommended by the researchers. However, it can still serve as a substitute to those lighting technologies. OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS For a clearer understanding of the reader, the following terms that were used in this study are defined based from the dictionary: Candle - a cylinder or block of wax or tallow with a central wick that is lit to produce light as it burns. ASIATECH os ASIA TECHNOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ARTS NTOR_ HIGH SCHOOL 11 Citrofortunella microcarpa - It is the scientific name for calamansi, which is the Philippine’s lime/lemon. Color - Perceivable characteristic of light. Component - A part that combines with other parts to make a machine, piece of equipment, or a something. Extract - Remove or taken out, especially by effort or force. Odor - A lingering quality, impression, or feeling attaching to something. Pesticide - Products contain at least one active ingredient and other intentionally added inert ingredients. Repellant - Able to dismiss a particular thing; causing disgust or distate. Synthetic - Made by chemical synthesis, especially to imitate a natural product Vitex negundo - It is the scientific name for lagundi. A herb traditionally used in folk medicine as well as for food consumption. CONCEPTUAL DEFINITION OF TERMS For a clearer understanding of the reader, the following terms were defined based on how they are used in this study: Candle - Emit smoke that would repel mosquitoes. ASIATECH os ASIA TECHNOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ARTS NIOR_ HIGH SCHOOL 12 Citrofortunella microcarpa - A fruit that comes from the citrus family. Color - A factor of a thing that can be seen by our eyes. Component - Ingredients that make-up of something. Extract - Pulled out substance from an ingredient. Odor - Molecules dissolved in the air that can be noticed by our sense of smell. Pesticide - Kick out pests such as cockroaches, and others. Repellant - A substance that prevent insects or other pests from approaching or settling. Synthetic - A product that contains chemical. Vitex negundo - A herb used to repel and/or exterminate mosquitoes. CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES ASIATECH os ASIA TECHNOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ARTS NTOR_ HIGH SCHOOL 15 research community, reflected in the steady growth in scientific publications devoted to the subject (Isman, M. B., 2015). Commercialization of new botanical insecticides has seriously lagged behind. Strict regulatory regimes, long the bane of small pesticide producers, are beginning to relax some of the data requirements for ‘low risk' pesticide products. Accordingly, The mosquito has killed an estimated 52 billion people from a total of 108 billion. She has killed nearly half of humanity As the greatest purveyor of extermination we have ever known, she has played a greater role in shaping our human story than any other living thing with which we share our global village (winegard, T.C., 2020). Therefore, From Herbal Folklore to Modern Medicine shows that lagundi has been used for centuries by local populations in the Philippines for its medicinal properties. Dr. Dayrit suspected that. REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES Quijano, M.F., Quijano, G., and Diaz, R. (2021) conducted a research, they examined the economics of Philippine Lime or ASIATECH os ASIA TECHNOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ARTS NIOR_ HIGH SCHOOL 16 Calamansi production in selected Cities and Municipalities in Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Using the data collected from 50 selected calamansi grower-farmers from top 5 producing area in Nueva Ecija, the study measured the profitability of and the production efficiency of calamansi production in the area. The study revealed that the typical calamansi farmer in the area as reflected in the instrument, thirty-two (32) or 64% which covers the majority of the respondents claimed that they fully owned the land they cultivated. Calamansi yield depends on its age as well. Fertilizer was found to harm output. The local government in cities and municipalities may engage in an intensive campaign in encouraging capitalists to form cooperatives, processing and manufacturing houses to produce calamansi juice and other valuable products out of the calamansi fruit. On the other hand, according to da Silva, M. R. M., & Ricci-JGnior, E. (2020), the incidence of dengue, Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever and malaria cases has increased significantly in the world. To avoid mosquito bites, one of the best strategies is the use of repellents. The interest in using plants as mosquito repellents has increased significantly. In this review, has been performed a survey of the plants with repellent activity, evaluate the trends of natural repellent formulations in the scientific literature, those described in patents and ASIATECH os ASIA TECHNOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ARTS NIOR_ HIGH SCHOOL 17 commercially available products. Limonene, 1 to 8 cineole, geraniol, eugenol and citronellal are the active compounds that mostly appear in the essential oils of plants with repellent activity. Data collected from scientific articles and patents show that micro particles are the most widely used extended release systems nowadays for natural repellents. The citronella essential oil was the one mostly used among the classic commercially available formulations, as well as in the extended release systems described in the literature and patents. And then, based from a research by Dhal, N.K., and Pattanayak, B. (2015), plant-based repellents have been used for generations in traditional practice as a personal protection measure against host- seeking mosquitoes. It gives us knowledge to make a traditional repellant in natural way using flowers, leaves and whole plants of under-listed 29 plants. This study aims to highlight the plants claimed to be associated with mosquito repellent activities by different tribal. These plant oils and dry leaves as well as whole part may represent an alternative in formulating potent and affordable products in the control of mosquitoes. In the year 2015, Webb, C. E. conducted a study about the health authorities needs to review recommendations on how to choose and use mosquito repellents. Mosquito-borne pathogens grown fastly in Australia, across South-East Asia and the Pacific region in ASIATECH os ASIA TECHNOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ARTS NITOR_ HIGH SCHOOL 20 Furthermore, Dr. Mohamed E. |. Badawy, shows that the essential oils from the peels of citrus plants were very effective against larvae and adults. This means there could be a natural and hugely accessible product available which could be used as a method of mosquito control. Moreover, medicinal plants are helpful for treatment of diseases and source of synthetic and traditional herbal medicine. (Agrawal, S., Haldankar, N., & Jadhav, A., 2018). Herbal oils are considered comparatively safer and better alternative to synthetic derivatives against mosqui-to-borne diseases. In conclusion, using a natural product as insect repellant can help reduce the harm in human health (Garg, S., Victoria, D., Kamran, S., Sharma, H., Yadav, A.K., 2019). SYNTHESIS ASIATECH os ASIA TECHNOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ARTS NITOR_ HIGH SCHOOL 21 To sum it up, mosquitoes are one of the insects that bring many diseases here in the Philippines, like dengue that can cause death to the carrier. That's why we think of a solution that can help to lessen the number of people that will get the disease, which is the mosquito repellant made by a candle with citrofortunella microcarpa and vitex negundo. A scented candle is said to be the one that sets the ambiance of the house and it can also make a perfect fragrance to the home. To make it more useful inside the house, we can make use of herbal remedies that can also benefit our body when we smell it, and the most important purpose of the candle is to create natural insect repellent. However, to make it more effective as a natural mosquito repellant, we put lagundi that has many purposes and use. It is used in all systems of treatment, it keeps the body free from all diseases and it is also used to treat a plethora of ailments, ranging from headache to migraine, from skin affections to wounds, and swelling, asthmatic pains, male and female sexual and_ reproductive problems. Furthermore, the most important use of this is it can be a repellant for all pests and also many insects like mosquitoes.
