RESEARCH PROBLEM PURPOSE STATEMENT 1 Research Problem Purpose Statement Capella University Introduction to Health Care Research Introduction Hospital-Acquired Conditions (HAC) are costly to the hospital they occur in but are a burden to the patients themselves. Although progress is being made in preventing some HAC’s, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. About one in 31 hospital patients has at least one healthcare-associated infection (CDC, 2021). Research Problem The incidence of SSIs in spinal surgery is at 3.1% (Aleem et al., 2020). These infections lead to significant patient morbidity, mortality, and increased health care costs. Identifying risk factors and strategies to prevent SSIs following spine surgery, focusing on avoiding infections, will be the team’s priority. The care and cost for patients with SSI’s are significant. Hospitals and health care organizations that perform spine surgeries have implemented prevention programs to help deter these infections from occurring (Dowdell et al., 2018). Strategies to reduce SSIs following spine surgery are of great importance for all stakeholders. Factors that can be used to prevent surgical site infections with a focus on improving surgical outcomes. Some patient factors that need to be considered are smoking cessation, monitoring glucose, managing malnutrition, and obesity, which patients can do for themselves to reduce infection factors (Aleem et al., 2020). Physicians and health care staff can do the following steps to help prevent infection bacterial screening, administer preoperative antibiotic therapy, preoperative skin cleansing, intraoperative temperature regulation, intrawound antibiotic powder, and betadine irrigation (Aleem et al., 2020). Purpose Statement The purpose of this study is to find solutions to prevent and reduce the number of hospital-acquired infections or SSI’s. Reducing these infections should have a considerable reduction in health care costs and the burden on a patient’s health. Factoring in evidence-based treatments and prevention will save organizations money in treatment and care (Aleem et al., 2020). Conclusion In conclusion, it will take the patient and the health care team to handle spinal surgery SSIs prevention appropriately. When working together to prevent the occurrence reduces the risk for the patient. When the patient discloses all their health comorbidities to their surgeon and all troubles are factored in beforehand, a safe and
