Through Revelation A Discipleship Ministry of SABC Introduction The Futurist View: Those who hold this view believe that Revelation speaks of future events, events that have to do with the end of time. The Futurist view can be further subdivided into three categories related to how the Millennial reign of Christ is treated. We will breach the subject of the Millennial near the end of the guide. The danger in studying Revelation is to limit yourself to just on of the above views. Each view contributes to a better understanding of Revelation. For example, parts of Revelation seem to speak to events and situations occurring in John’s day. Other parts of Revelations seems to speak of events that have not yet occurred. Instead of picking one view and interpreting all of Revelation through the lens of that view, we need be mindful of all views and let the text speak for itself. Old Testament Revelation contains more Old Testament references than any other New Testament book. Revelation relies heavily on Old Testament books such as Psalms, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. While John does not quote an Old Testament passage directly, the book is filled with references, symbols, and allusions found in the Old Testament. The Old Testament is a valuable tool in unraveling the mystery of Revelation. Numbers, Numbers, Numbers Numerology is another important aspect of Revelation that plays a key role in its interpretation. Rarely are numbers to be taken literally in Revelation. The following list is not comprehensive of the all numbers found in Revelation but offer a guide in helping decypher numbers found in revelation. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Seven Spirits before His throne (v. 4) Isaiah 11:2 And the Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. Faithful Witness (v. 5) John 3:32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. John 8:14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. John 8:18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.” Firstborn from the Dead, Rulers of the kings of the earth (v. 5) Psalm 89:27 I will also appoint him my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth. Colossians 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. To Him Who Loves us and has freed us from our sins by His blood (v. 5) John 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 1 John 3:16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. I Corinthians 6:20 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! He is coming in the clouds, every eye will see him, even those who pierced him. (v. 7) Daniel 7:13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, Session 2 Revelation 1:10-20 Revelation: Session 2 Supporting Verses The Lord’s Day Acts 20:7 Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight. In the Spirit Ezekiel 3:12 Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me a great thunderous voice: “Blessed is the glory of the LORD from His place!” 2Corinthians 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven. Long Robe and with a Golden Sash Philippians 2:10-11 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Head and Hair were White like Wool: Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson,They shall be as wool.” Daniel 7:9 I watched till thrones were put in place, And the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, And the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, Its wheels a burning fire; His Eyes Like a Blazing Flame Hebrews 4:13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. His Voice like the Sound of Cascading Waters: Ezekiel 43:2 And behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east. His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shone with His glory. Psalms 29:3-5, 7-9 The voice of the LORD is over the waters; The God of glory thunders; The LORD is over many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; The voice of the LORD is full of majesty. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars, Yes, the LORD splinters the cedars of Lebanon. The voice of the LORD divides the flames of fire. The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; The LORD shakes the Wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth, And strips the forests bare; And in His temple everyone says, “Glory!” John 5:28-29 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. From His Mouth came a Sharp Two Edged Sword Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. His Face was Shining like the Sun: Matthew 17:2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. Hidden Mana Psalm 78:24-25 Had rained down manna on them to eat, And given them of the bread of heaven. Men ate angels’ food; He sent them food to the full. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” John 6:48-51 I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. Then he set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal, which he had built in Samaria. And Ahab made a wooden image. The Ruler of God’s Creation Colossians 1:15-18 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. Revelation Session 5 The Gathering of the Church or the Rapture V. 1 is critical in understanding and forming your view of Revelation. Futurist Views of Revelation: 1. Pre-Millennialist: View holds that the rapture of the church and the Great Tribulation will take place before the Millennial reign of Christ. 2. Post-Millennialist: View holds that Christ will return to earth after a Golden Age (Millennium) 3. A-millennialist: View holds that the Millennium is symbolic for the church age which we are already in. Verses on the Rapture John 14:1-3 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 1 Thessalonians 4:14-17 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 1Corinthians 15:51-53 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. Similarities between John’s Experience and the Rapture 1. Heaven is Open to Receive God’s Child 2. Voice like a Trumpet 3. Sudden Event 4. Comes at the End of the Church Section 5. Signals the beginning of impending judgment Evidence that Supports the Rapture at Revelation 4:1 1. The anti-Christ and the Great Tribulation come at the end of time. Daniel 9:26 “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined. Daniel 9:27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate.” Matthew 24:15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), Matthew 24:21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 2. The Holy Spirit must be removed before the Anti-Christ can be revealed. See 1 Thessalonians 2:3-12 3. The 24 elders are jointly ruling with Jesus before the rest of Revelation unfolds. A. The number 12 or multiples of 12 represent the government of God. Revelation 2:26 And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nation. Revelation 3:21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. B. The white clothes and crowns upon their head represent the redeemed of the Lord who have received their reward in Heaven. Revelation 3:5 He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. Revelation 2:10 Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. 9. According to v. 6, what was also before the throne? What looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal 10. Who was in the center around the throne? The Four Living Creatures 11. How are the four living creatures described in v. 6? They were covered with eyes, in front and in back 12. How is the first living creature described? Like a lion 13. How is the second living creature described? Like an ox 14. How is the third living creature described? Face of a Man 15. How is the fourth living creature described? Like a Flying Eagle 16. According to verse 8, how else are the four living creatures described? Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. 17. What do the 24 elders do night and day? Sing Praises to God 18. In response to the praises of the four living creatures, what do the 24 elders do? Fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and worship Him. They lay their crowns before the throne and sing praises to God. Revelation: Session 6 Supporting Verses Rainbow Genesis 9:11-3 Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.” 24 Elders (24 Priests Serving in the Temple) 1Chronicles 24:3-5 Then David with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to the schedule of their service. There were more leaders found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar, and thus they were divided. Among the sons of Eleazar were sixteen heads of their fathers’ houses, and eight heads of their fathers’ houses among the sons of Ithamar. Thus they were divided by lot, one group as another, for there were officials of the sanctuary and officials of the house of God, from the sons of Eleazar and from the sons of Ithamar. Crystal Sea (Water Basin in Temple) Exodus 30:18 “You shall also make a laver of bronze, with its base also of bronze, for washing. You shall put it between the tabernacle of meeting and the altar. And you shall put water in it, Four Living Creatures (Veil of the Temple) Exodus 26:31 “You shall make a veil woven of blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen. The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people. The Root of David Isaiah 11:10 “And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His resting place shall be glorious. 1Kings 2:45 But King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD forever.” The Lamb John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. Matthew 24 Matt. 24:3 ¶ Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be?
