Chapter 16 Review Question Answers. 1) You need to know the intended audience. Who, What, When, Where, How many people, etc. & you also need to research and know everything about the executive who is going to give the speech. 2) Because writing a speech takes a great ammount of time and energy so it is important to know your objective and make sure everything is pertinent. 3) 8 aspects to organization of the speech include: 1) Introduction (establish contact with the audience) 2) Statement of main purpose of the speech 3) Development of the theme 4) Statement of 2ndry there if any 5) Enunciation of the main point that the speaker has been building up to. The heart of the speech 6) A pause, andecdote or two so the audience can absorb the point 7) Restatement in summary form. 8) A brief conclusion 4) That way he is familiar with the way his speech will sound, and be able to make it more personal etc. 5) A speech is focused on content, it needs to be appealing to the ear, and is often only presented once, so message must be clearly understood at time it is given. 6) Use personal pronouns, avoid jargon,use simple words, use round numbers, use contractions, avoid empty phrases, use active verbs, don’t dilut expression of opinion, avoid modifiers, use direct quoutes, vary sentence length, use questions, make comparisons and contrasts, create pattern of thoughts. 7) Smile, Posture, eye contact, animation, kinetics (motion) 8) Because audience will only remember a small part of what they here, so a speaker needs to know how to communicate with them in the most effective way. You can find info out by researching the organization. 9) A typical speech is 20-30 mins long. And a 20 min speech in text is 10 pages double spaced or 2500-3000 words. 10) Avoid obvious reading of the speech, and nervous gestures, like playing withhair, fiddling with necklace, moving legs or arms. 11) Sight accounts for 83% of what we learn. when a visual is combined with voice, retention increases 50% 12) Use computer monitor, use a projector, post PP presentation on web, make overhead transparencies, print pages, put on a CD or DVD 13) The triple 7 rule- NO more than 7 bullets, no more than 7 words per bullet, no more than seven lines per bullet slide. 24-28 font size. Keep it simple. Readable font color 14) Because they spend over 10 hours each month meeting with outside groups, so technology training is very important. 15) They have lists of employees who are experts on different subjects. Train speakers, produces visual aids, develops key messages about organizations, products, or services. Telephone audience provides quick answers for media 16) Send out an advisory, Prepare news releases, or packaging speech in brochure form and sending it out to employees & customers.
