REVIEWER IN P.E EMERGENCY CARE- originated during French emperor napoleons campaign in the late 1700. DOMINIQUE JEAN LARREY- the surgeon in chief for grand army -became the first doctor to try to save the wounded during battles 1860- wartime principle of emergency care was applied emergencies in some American cities. 1878- a writer for harpe’s new monthly magazine EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES (EMS)- A network of community resources and health care professionals medical personnel that provides emergency care and transport to victims of injury and sudden illness. THE CITIZEN RESPONDER- the first and most important crucial link in EMS system THE EMS DISPATCHER- the second link in EMS system who works in communication center THE FIRST RESPONDER – the third link in the EMS system THE EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT)- The fourth link in the EMS system HOSPITAL HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS- the fifth link of the EMS system begins once the victim arrives at hospital or other medical facility. DEFINITIVE (EXTENDED) CARE- the sixth and final link of the EMS system called definitive care, goal is to return the victim to his or her previous state of health. COMPONENTS OF THE EMS SYSTEM The citizens role in the EMS system include four basic steps:  Recognize that an emergency exits  Decide to act  Call EMS professionals  Provide first aid FIRST AID- it is immediate care given to a person who has been injured or suddenly taken ill. Objective:  To alleviate suffering  To prevent added injury  To prolong life and save limbs Role:  it is the bridge the gap between the victim and physician  it is not intended to compete with nor take the place of the services of the physician  it ends when the services of physician begins NEEDS AND VALUES OF FIRST AID: to minimize if not totally prevent accident to prevent added injury prevent accident to train people to the right at the right time accident happens and sudden illnesses are common and often serious people very often harm rather than help proper and immediate care is necessary to save life and limbs RECOGNIZING EMERGENCIES  Recognizing an emergency is the first step in responding EMERGENCY- is a situation requiring immediate action 2 TYPES OF EMERGENCY 1. MEDICAL EMERGENCY- sudden illness that requires immediate action or attention such as heart attack, diabetic emergency and epeliptic seizure 2. TRAUMA EMERGENCY- is an injury or damage to the body, such as broken arm, cuts that results from violent force. EMERGENCIES- can happen to anyone friend, family member, stranger or you. They can happen anywhere on the road, at work, at school or at play. Recognizing an emergency may be difficult at times. You may become aware of an emergency because of certain signal. COMMON INDICATOR OF AN EMERGENCY  Unusual noises  Unusual sights  Unusual odor  Unusual appearance  Breathing Difficulties  Clutching the chest  Slurred confused or hesitant to speech  Confused behavior  Uncharacteristic skin color THE GOLDEN RULE DO’S 1. Obtain consent 2. Think worst 3. Call for help 4. Identify yourself 5. Provide comfort/emotional support 6. Be calm and direct as possible DON’T’S 1. Arouse unconscious patient 2. Administer fluids 3. Let the victim see his injury 4. Leave a victim alone 5. Assume the patient’s obvious injuries are the only one 6. Make unrealistic promises 7. Require the patient make decision BARRIERS AND ACTION  Presence of bystanders, crowd or family members  Uncertainly about the victims  Nature of the injury or illness  Fear of disease transmission  Fear of doing something wrong PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENTS Standard precautions against disease Transmission 1. PERSONAL HYGIENE  Hand washing  Proper grooming 2. PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT/BODY SUNSTANCE ISOLATION  Mask  Googles  Surgical gloves  Gown 3. Handle all needles, intravenous equipment and sharp instrument with extreme care. 4. PROPER IMMUNIZATIONS  DPT (diphtheria-pertusis-tetanus) in childhood  Tetanus booster every 10 years  Measles  Mumps  Rubella (german measles)  Polio  Hepatitis HUMAN BODY -A miraculous machine - it performs many complex functions, each of which helps us live. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM - Supplies the body with the oxygen through breathing - Includes the airway and the lungs The airway begins at the nose and mouth, which form the upper airway. TRACHEA- also called windpipe ESOPHAGUS- behind the trachea BRONCHI- air reaches the lungs through two tubes
