ENGL 1101: Spring 2011 Instructor: Brittany Burrell Assignment #2: “Rhetorical Analysis” in an Academic Essay “Take care of the sense and the sounds will take care of themselves.” -- Alice in Wonderland Goals: As we continue to view writing as a situated and social activity, we will look at the cultural artifacts of our time in a critical and analytical way. It is important that you write about things that are both relevant and current. You will conduct a rhetorical analysis on an artifact of pop culture. You may choose a song or an advertisement. You will begin by transcribing the song or advertisement, and you will include the transcription as an appendix to your paper. You will discuss the relevant rhetorical choices, their impact, the assumptions made about the audience, and you will include any broader conclusions that you make about the piece. Consider the following questions as a starting point: What does this pop culture artifact assume that I already know? What values does this pop culture artifact assume that I share or want me to accept? Who is the target audience? How is language being used to construct identities and values? You may certainly expand this to include things that are not listed here, as long as they meet the goals and purposes of the assignment. Process/ Requirements: This assignment will be taken through several drafts with opportunities for peer and instructor feedback. You will have an opportunity to edit and polish a final draft for presentation in your portfolio at the end of the semester. You should aim for a paper that is:  five (5) or less pages in length  typed using a word processor program such as Word  double spaced with 1 inch margins on all sides  written in 12 point font size (either Times New Roman or Calibri)  follows the formatting guidelines of whichever style (i.e. MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.) is used by your major. The goal is not a magic number of pages or words, but an organized and meaningful text. During the drafting phase, you should attempt to use grammar, spelling, and punctuation to the best of your ability. We will work on improving any weaknesses in these areas as you move through your development process. Your final portfolio draft will be expected to be the most polished in all of these areas. You will print out your drafts to present at the beginning of class on the dates listed below. Important Dates: February 21 One copy of your most recent draft due March 2 One copy of your “final” draft due in class
