Names Names Mullins Reading & Writing for the College Bound Date “The Most Hunted Person of the Modern Age” Throughout the 1990s Princess Diana was the most publicised figure in the world. As her brother Earl Charles Spencer determined, “It is a point to remember that of all the ironies about Diana, perhaps the greatest was this: a girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunter person of the modern age.” On August 31st, 1997 Princess Diana was killed in a horrific car accident; just seven days later her brother Earl spoke to the world in the largely watched “Princess Diana Eulogy”. With Westminster Abbey completely full with loved ones and friends Earl took the stand to not only reflect on the past but to speak of the future of Diana’s Legacy. The author’s aim was to reach the people who have been lead to believe this was not anyones fault and thought that Diana had died in vein. Earl Charles Spencer’s Eulogy touched every single person who heard it. Diana’s casket was draped throughout London until it finally reached Westminster Abbey where the viewers awaited. The funeral was broadcasted across the world, with British Television viewers reaching an astonishing 32.78 million views and 2 billion people traced the event world-wide; which makes it one of the most watched events in history. Diana’s casket was draped throughout London until it finally reached Westminster Abbey where the viewers awaited. The audience of this speech was almost any type of person who had access to a television or could physically walk to the Abbey. Earl started his speech with words that no one will ever forget. Whilst eulogizing his sister Earl does not only do that but he also adds what she lived for Names and how she lived her life. In his speech Spencer utilizes fallacies in-order to persuade the audience that yes indeed the Royal Family and paparazzi destroyed Princess Diana’s life. Earl would then retort, “I don’t think she ever understood why her genuinely good intentions were sneered at by the media, why there appeared to be a permanent quest on their behalf to bring her down.” In this instance Spencer is adopted the fallacy Name Calling. He accepts this fallacy and begins calling out the paparazzi as monsters who just want to see the demise of Princess Diana without providing any real examples. He also exploits the fallacy Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc, which means, after this, therefore, because of this. Spencer practices this by subtly blaming the Royal Family implying that because of her joining the Royal Family she is then hunted and because of this she is killed in a tragic paparazzi chase. He conveys when retorting, “...I pledge that we, your blood family, will do all we can to continue the imaginative and loving way in which you were steering these two exceptional young men…” Earl Charles Spencer goes on to leave the audience questioning if he was eulogizing or blaming the paparazzi and Royal Family. From end to end Spencer exhausts pathos in the eulogy. Pathos is the appeal to the audiences emotions. For this speech it was quite easy to appeal to peoples emotions as it was a funeral. As Earl began to close his speech you could sense the sadness in his voice as he includes, “Above all, we give thanks for the life of a woman I’m so proud to be able to call my sister: the unique, the complex, the extraordinary and irreplaceable Diana…” In the audio it is clear that the crowd begins to sniffle and cry along with him. Not only does he exploit pathos he also manipulates ethos quite easily. No single person can take away the credibility of Earl Charles Spencer because he has known Diana his whole life and is her blood brother. As stated in the quote above Earl assures his credibility by stating that he loves his sister so very much. Earl charges the press and the Royal Family but were they to blame?
