Paper 1 — Rhetorical Analysis Peer Review Draft May 24th Final Draft Due May 25th by 2p For this paper, you will choose a State of the Union Address and analyze its rhetorical appeal and effectiveness using your brand new textual, contextual, and rhetorical argumentative skills. You should examine the structure, content, context, style, and how those elements are used to advance the speech’s purpose. Or not; you can analyze a speech’s failure, using these same criteria. You are encouraged to employ Orwell’s “Politics and the English Language” to enhance your analysis. Your analysis will be graded on your argument’s ability to complete the following: 1. Identify and analyze the claim/thesis of the speech. What is the speech doing? What is its purpose? I encourage you to quote from the speech and then re-interpret those words in your own. 2. Identify and analyze the text of the speech. What is your speech saying? How is it arguing? What rhetorical strategies does your speech use? You should consider the use of language and what is missing as aspects of communication. 3. Identify and analyze the context of the speech. How long is the speech? Who gives the speech and when is it from? What was happening at the time of the speech, both generally and specifically? How do those answers impact the speech’s rhetoric and effectiveness? 4. Identify and analyze the rhetorical appeal. Using your what you have argued above, what is the appeal of the speech? Is the speech shocking/pleasing/numbing emotionally, physically, psychically? How is this appeal dependent upon the text, context, and claim of its rhetoric? 5. Identify and analyze the success of the speech. Do you believe the speech successfully employs its rhetoric to reach its audience and proffer its message? Do not just answer yes or no; instead, review your claim and support it using all the criteria above. Your paper should be as specific and clear as possible by focusing on the speech and its rhetoric. In other words, you are not simply listing rhetorical appeals but analyzing how the rhetoric and its use appeals to and effects the viewer. You should do so by constructing strong, arguable topic sentences with coherent, well-developed paragraphs that develop your thesis statement and consistently relate be to that thesis statement. Your analysis should exhibit the critical reading and thinking skills you have reviewed in this chapter. Most of all, try to enjoy the assignment. Choose a speech reflects an interest of yours, not just the first one you come across. If at any time you are frustrated or stuck, email me or come by my office hours and I will talk you through your frustration. Good luck. ENC 1101 — Rhetorical Analysis
