ROCKS EARTH & LIFE SCIENCE ANDREW FONTAMILLAS, ABE ROCKS Rocks are natural solid materials that make up the most of the Earth’s lithosphere. They could be found lying around the surface of the Earth and even beneath it. Rocks that form a bigger mass are composed of tiny particles of minerals compressed together due to pressure and temperature. The Rock Cycle In the surface of the Earth, igneous rocks are slowly broken down into smaller fragments known as sediments through the process of weathering. The different agents of erosion will transport down these sediments to nearby bodies of water or in deserts. In the site of deposition, the sediments will undergo processes, like sedimentation, compaction and cementation. SEDIMENTA TION COMPACTION & CEMENTATION IGNEOUS ROCKS Igneous rocks are formed from the solidification of lava when a volcano erupts. Two types of igneous rocks a. Extrusive igneous rocks- igneous rocks formed on the surface b. Intrusive or plutonic igneous rocks- igneous rocks formed beneath the ground pie] tea GABBRO PEGMATITE When hot magma reaches the Earth’s surface as a volcano erupts, it cools quickly to form small crystals. Some cool so quickly that they form an amorphous glass. Extrusive or volcanic igneous rocks BASALT ANDESITE RHYOLITE iia SCORIA TUFF
