Thus, to maintain a good relationship, it is important to have a control over one's anger. Having arguments over unimportant or trivial issues is extremely harmful and a waste of time. If someone commits a mistake, one should be ready to forgive and forget rather than being angry and arguing with the person endlessly. In today's time, people try to find only the positive things in others and do not easily accept their negative aspects. Hence is becoming extremely difficult to maintain a good and cordial relationship with others. OR (ii) In the poem, the trees are represented as a metaphor for human beings. The poet says, the way humans want freedom, nature too wants to be free from the control of hum The trees are brought to the artificial glass houses but the natural habitat for them is the forest. The trees are desperate to come out of their artificial barriers. After a long and hard struggle, the trees are marching towards the forest, which is their natural habitat. 11. (i) It is fairly impossible that Ausable had worked out his plan on the spot. In fact, it seems that Ausable using his quick thinking took advantage of the situation in order to build up a story of a balcony and police knocking at the door. Another aspect is that Ausable could have built up his plan in detail much in advance. He knew that he was in possession of confidential documents that someone, and would even try to get hold of them. Ausable might have surveyed the room and built up a story in advance and would have also told the waiter to knock loudly Answer Key 11 and continuously in case he did not open the door in one go. OR (ii) Success is the fruit of failure. It never comes straight but through failure. This can be seen in the life of Richard Ebright. Although he earned top grades in school, on everyday things he was just like every other kid. He faced many failures in his life, but every failure strengthened his will to succeed. When he was in seventh grade, he participated in County Science Fair with his slides of frog tissues. But he could not win a prize. This made him determined to win the prize and in his eighth grade, he again participated in the science fair with the experiment of viral disease in monarch caterpillars and won the prize. The very next year, he participated with his experiment of whether viceroy butterflies copy the monarch butterflies in order to save their life from the birds and this project won Ebright, third prize in overall County Science Fair. His experiment regarding gold spots of monarch that the spots produced hormones necessary for the full development of butterflies won third prize in International Science and Engineering Fair. Next year, his advanced experiments on the monarch pupa won him first place at the International Science Fair. Thus, for Richard Ebright, we can say that success is failure turned inside out. Subject: Poor condition of heritage sites Sir, Last Sunday, I along with my friends went to visit the Taj Mahal. I was quite excited to have a glimpse of this seventh wonder of the world, an epitome of beauty. However, the movement area outside the monument was littered with plastic plates, broken bottles, food’s leftover etc. It goes without saying that a great number of tourists not only from the different parts of the country, but from abroad also come with a deep longing to Agra to view the Taj, but the mess around the monument gives a shock to them and repel them. It is high time people acquire some good civic habits. They should throw their waste leftovers and discarded articles into the dustbins that are kept at short distances. Spitting of pan-masala should be forbidden and the offenders should be fined. The parents should ensure that their children refrain from doing any activity lessens the beauty of the area. Answer Key 15 sound. Moreover, a hyena laughs while swallowing it’s prey, while a crocodile shed tears. (v) Custard was always teased as being the cowardly one, by all others-When the pirate arrived, others ran away to hide-Custard was the only one who stood up to fight with him/who attacked him. 9. (i) Monsieur Loisel was a contented man and did not seek unnecessary materialistic pleasures. He made every effort to fulfill his wife’s desires. When Matilda lost the necklace, Monsieur Loisel sacrifices his own future to help her repay the debt without being complacent. (ii) Griffin had carried out several experiments to prove that the human body could become invisible. Finally, he swallowed certain rare drugs and his body became as transparent as a sheet of glass. (iii) Ausable told a fake story to Max about a balcony that belonged to the next apartment. During this time there was a repeated knocking at the door that frightened Max. So, in order to save himself from getting arrested, Max jumped from the window believing that there was a balcony. However, he got himself killed. 10. (i) Existence of Humanity After reading ‘A Letter to God’, our faith in humanity gathers strength. We learn from the story that even today there are people who help others without any self interest. The postmaster and the post office employees set an example for everyone of us to be kind. Though they all laughed at his letter, they were really moved by the intensity of faith Lencho had in God. The way they all decided to help the stranger in his hard times restores our faith in the existence of humanity and motivates us to be a noble and kind person. OR (ii) Whatever situation life throws at us, it evokes both positive and negative responses. The poet in the poem 'Dust of Snow', was in a sorrowful mood. However, when a crow shook down the 'dust of snow' on him, his bitter mood changed into more optimistic one. Now, being in a surrowful or bad mood already, the poet could have got angry at the crow also. However, the dust of snow becomes a positive medium of change for him. It made him cheerful to some extent and helped him forget his sadness, at least for a few moments. Thus, we see that instead of seeing the negative aspect of a happening one should see the positive aspect, and one's response may greatly affect the outcome of incidents. 11. (i) Parents play a crucial and indelible role. Parents influence their children both implicitly and explicitly. Parents act as role models for children. They are the first teachers, friends, companions and guides of their children. Richard H. Ebright's mother was loving, caring, 16 English Language and Literature 10 understanding. She was her son's friend and companion. She filled the vacuum in Ebright's life in his father's absence. She invested time and energy in his upbringing which made him see heights of success. On the other hand Bholi's parents were uncaring, indifferent, biased, and insensitive and had a patriarchal mindset. They had a traditional outlook and did not believe in the education of girls, were totally indifferent to Bholi and her needs. They neglected her and did not even bother to groom her. They sent her school not to educate her but to save their own face. Despite their prosperity, they left Bholi to her own misery. Worst was when they decided to marry her off to Bishamber. The contribution and companionship of parents cannot be denied. Love, care, and guidance from parents make a difference, sculpt children and shape their future. OR (ii) It is true that no one is born a thief and it is the circumstances that make a person take that path. Hari's return to Anil shows that despite indulging in criminal acts, he still had a practical and positive attitude towards life. Hari deep down was not really happy being a thief. It is the awakening of Hari's conscience and Anil's love and care that reformed Hari's character.
