The sample questions below are intended to give you a basic idea of the type and format of questions that will appear on the first exam. The exam will include short answer questions similar to those below, which should be answered with terms, phrases, or short sentences. There will be approximately 18 to 20 questions, of which you will probably need to select about 14 to answer as directed. Some questions are primarily from lecture material, others are primarily from the readings, and some include material from both lectures and readings. ******************************************** Short Answer Questions (4 points per question) Directions: Answer any fourteen of the following questions with terms, phrases, or short sentences for a total of 56 points. If you answer more than 14 questions, only the first 14 answered questions will be counted. Check to be sure you’ve answered only the questions you want graded. 1. (a) Based on the New York Times articles, cite any two cases in which pre-agricultural societies are believed to have caused significant environmental damage. In each case indicate what impacts they are believed to have caused. (b) Identify two of the ways in which hunter-gatherer groups often limit their rate of population growth. 2. (a) What is einkorn? What is the main physical feature that differentiates a domesticated version of einkorn from a wild version of that plant? (b) As shown in the video and discussed in class, the Natufians are believed to have been one of the first people to do what (before they started domesticating crops)? Explain briefly how and why this change probably affected their population. 3. (a) Identify any three heat-using industries that were common before the Industrial Revolution. (b) What was the most important advantage of charcoal as a source of heat energy compared to fuelwood? (c) What two main sources of power provided the greatest total amounts of power in human societies before the Industrial Revolution? 4. (a) What key shortage does Wilkinson in his article say was the major factor in the “ecological background” to the industrial revolution in England? Identify at least two of the effects of this shortage.
