Chapter 1
ļ½ Is the science that seeks to understand how and why people (all kinds of people) change with increasing age (from conception until death), and how and why they remain the same ļ½ Recognizes the sources of continuity and discontinuity from the beginning of life to the end. This perspective recognizes that development is: ā¦ Multidirectional ā¦ Muticontextual ā¦ Multicultural ā¦ Multidisciplinary ā¦ Plasticity ļ½ Definition: Characteristic of development referring to its nonlinear progressionāgains and losses, compensations and deficits, predictable and unpredictable changes ļ½ 3 aspects (dynamic change, butterfly effect, and continuity) ā¦ Dynamic change: continual change that occurs within each person and each social group (example growth) ā¦Butterfly effect: in which even a tiny change in one system can have a profound effect on the other systems of development ā¦Power of continuity: in which even larger changes seemingly have no effect ļ½ Socioeconomic (SES) Context: ā¦ Determined by many overlapping factors, including income, education, place of residence, and occupation. At the bottom of the SES ladder, for example limited opportunities and intensified social pressures conspire to make growing up especially difficult. ā¦ Affects families and neighborhoods ļ½ Cultural Context: Affects development in may ways from how parents feed or discipline their children to the ways in which they emphasize childrenās education. ļ½ Comparing several cultures makes it easier to notice universal/different pattern in development ā¦ We can look at: ā¦ Ethnic groups: (share attributes such as heritage, national origin, religion, language) ā¦ Race (problematic concept) why? ļ½ The Scientific Method: 1. Formulate a Research question 2. Develop a hypothesis 3. Test the hypothesis 4. Draw conclusions and if applicable 5. Make findings available Research Methods
