Scrapbook about functional group, Slides of Chemistry

Functional groups are specific groupings of atoms within molecules that have their own characteristic properties, regardless of the other atoms present in a molecule. Common examples of functional groups are alcohols, alkenes, alkynes, amines, carboxylic acids, aldehydes, ketones, esters, and ethers, among others.

Rayo 11-STEM Hydroxyl FUNCTIONAL GROUP Ether FUNCTIONAL GROUP Methoxy Ethane  It is used as an aerosol propellant, as a refrigerant, and as a blowing agent for the production of some foams. It can also be used as a fuel in diesel engines.  Risk of fire and explosion; Extremely flammable; Forms spontaneously combustible peroxides on contact with air. BENEFITS: RISK: Diethyl Ether ● Breathing Diethyl Ether can cause drowsiness, excitement, dizziness, vomiting, irregular breathing, and increased saliva. High exposure can cause unconsciousness and even death. ● It is commonly used as a solvent in laboratories and as a starting fluid for some engines. RISK: BENEFITS:  Propionaldehyde can irritate the skin causing a rash or burning feeling on contact. * Contact can severely irritate and burn the eyes. Propionaldehyde RISK:  Propionaldehyde is a colorless liquid with a strong fruity odor. It is used as a synthetic flavoring, in plastic and rubber manufacturing, and as a disinfectant and preservative. BENEFITS: Ketone FUNCTIONAL GROUP ACETONE RISK:  Eye contact with liquid and acetone vapours can lead to irritation or eye damage. Exposure to the eyes for a long time may cause permanent damage. When acetone is breathed in or ingested it can be absorbed into the body. This can cause headache, movement problems, tiredness slurred speech, nausea, vomiting and fitting. BENEFITS:  It breaks down nail polish, making it easy to remove with a cotton swab or cloth. Acetone is used in the textile industry for degreasing wool and degumming silk. Acetone is frequently incorporated in solvent systems or “blends,” used to make lacquers for automotive and furniture finishes.  In contact with the skin or eyes, acetic acid solutions of 80% or more can be corrosive, causing severe burns of any exposed tissue. ACETIC ACID  Acetic acid is used as a raw material and solvent in the production of other chemical products, in oil and gas production, and in the food and pharmaceutical industries. RISK: BENEFITS:  it can also be toxic if used in an inappropriate manner. If it gets into a person's eyes, it can lead to severe irritation and possibly blindness. PROPIONIC ACID RISK:  Propionic acid is used as a preservative and flavoring agent in various types of packaged foods. This includes cheese but also baked goods like tortillas and bread. It's also used a preservative in animal foods like hay, corn, oats, wheat, sorghum and barley. BENEFITS: Ester FUNCTIONAL GROUP Amine FUNCTIONAL GROUP AMINO ACIDS Amino acids help: • Break down food. • Grow and repair body tissue. • Make hormones and brain chemicals (neurotransmitters). • Provide an energy source. • Maintain healthy skin, hair and nails.  Three of the most commonly mentioned risks of long-term amino acid supplementation are nausea, headache, and pain. Amino acid supplements can impact your blood sugar levels. BENEFITS: RISK:  Contact with liquid aniline may cause mild irritation to skin or eyes. Aniline is absorbed well through the skin, and this can contribute to systemic toxicity. ANILINE RISK: BENEFITS:  Aniline is used in rubber accelerators and anti-oxidants, dyes and intermediates, photographic chemicals, as isocyanates for urethane foams, in pharmaceuticals, explosives, petroleum refining; and in production of diphenylamine, phenolics, herbicides and fungicides. it can cause a number of side effects, including:  Allergic reactions such as rash or swelling  Blood disorders such as low platelets or low white blood cells PARACETAMOL RISK:  It's typically used to relieve mild or moderate pain, such as headaches, toothache or sprains, and reduce fevers caused by illnesses such as colds and flu. BENEFITS: Thiol FUNCTIONAL GROUP METHANETHIOL RISK:  methanethiol is a toxic, extremely flammable, colorless gas with a smell similar to rotten cabbage. It occurs naturally in the blood and brain, and in other animals and plant tissues. BENEFITS:  Methanethiol is mainly used to produce the essential amino acid methionine, which is used as a dietary component in poultry and animal feed. Methanethiol is also used in the plastic industry as a moderator for free-radical polymerizations and as a precursor in the manufacture of pesticides. CHLOROBENZE • In the past, cholorobenzene was used to make phenol and DDT. Today, it is still used to produce pesticides and chemicals used to prevent or kill unwanted pests.  Chlorobenzene may damage the lungs, liver and kidneys. ► High exposure may affect the nervous system. Any evaluation should include a careful history of past and present symptoms with an exam. BENEFITS: RISK: BENZYL CHLORIDE • Benzyl Chloride is a CARCINOGEN and MUTAGEN. HANDLE WITH EXTREME CAUTION. can severely irritate and burn the skin and eyes with possible eye damage. exposures may cause a build-up of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema), a medical emergency. • Benzyl Chloride is a colorless liquid with a strong, irritating odor that causes tearing of the eyes. It is used in making dyes, plasticizers, drugs, lubricants, resins and cosmetics. RISK: BENEFITS:
