Script 24 A Grain of Wheat Lent 5 John 12:23-24 THEME The Gospels in Lent can be quite distressing as we realize that Jesus has set His face towards Jerusalem and is walking steadily to His death. But Jesus wasn’t death-haunted; all His predictions of the Passion have seeds of hope in them. This session introduces the children to the idea that death couldn’t hold Jesus and, as a result of His victory, it can’t hold us either. SET UP • The liturgical color is Purple. • The “Desert Tray”plus the Jesus candle to hand. • Pictures from the CD-ROM. • Packet of seeds. • Paper flower shapes from the CD-ROM. (Try to replicate them on quite heavy paper. They are such an easy shape to draw, you or the kids may make some yourselves.) • Large glass bowl, pitcher of water. WELCOME the children and lead them in The Sign of the Cross X (p. xxxvi). THE KYRIE Lord Jesus, you came to call us back to God, Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Lord Jesus, you fasted in the desert, Christ have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord Jesus, you told sinners how much God loved them, Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Script 24—A Grain of Wheat 131 Ask the children to repeat The Prayer for Forgiveness after you (p. xxxvi). Leader We’re coming up to the end of Lent And we’re still with Jesus in the desert. Bring the “Desert Tray”forward and run the sand through your fingers. It’s very dry Very rocky Very lonely But Jesus is there in the middle. (Place the Jesus candle.) Let’s say our Lent prayer together. Light the candle and ask the children to repeat after you. OPENING Lord Jesus, PRAYER This Lent, help us to return to you To pray to you And love you. Help us to see you more clearly, Love you more dearly, And follow you more nearly, Day by day. Amen. BEFORE THE GOSPEL Leader We’ve got to the Fifth Sunday of Lent. This is the moment when Jesus decided to go to Jerusalem and finish the job God had sent Him to do. He knew He’d probably be killed, but He knew something else— that His death would bring life to everyone else. Let’s hear that in the Gospel There is no Gospel Procession in Lent. Ask a child to bring the Gospel book down to the front. THE GOSPEL John 12:23-24 Optional Paraphrase Jesus said to His friends, “The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you if a grain of wheat falls on the ground, it will never be more than one grain unless it dies. But if it dies it will produce many grains.” 134 Lent 5 Sum up Leader Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, if a grain of wheat falls on the ground, it will just stay one grain—unless it dies. But if it dies, it will produce many grains.” FINAL Eternal God, PRAYER You sent Jesus to destroy death. We pray that, by His victory, we too may overcome death And live with you for ever In your heavenly Kingdom Where you live with the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. BACK IN CHURCH Take the bowl and some fresh water back to church, plus the children, all armed with their folded-up flower shapes. Leader Today we heard Jesus saying that if a grain of wheat fell into the ground and died, it would produce many more grains. Child 1 We thought that Jesus was telling us that He was like that grain of wheat. Child 2 And we thought we’d show you how quickly things can come back to life. Child 3 Holding up its folded-up flower We’ve all got little bits of paper folded up: Watch this! Someone pours the water into the bowl. The children float their flower shapes They open up. Child 4 You see, we’ve got a bowl full of flowers! Sample cartoons for this script (CD24.1) (CD24.2) (CD24.3) (CD24.1) (CD24.2) (C D 24 .5 ) (CD24.6) (CD24.7)
