The speaker also uses listing when he mentions “And the rest of us have seen too many promises of swift victories and dying insurgencies and budding democracy”. Once again, the word ‘and’ is used multiple times to list the consequences of waging needless wars. The use of listing emphasizes important points that allow a certain sequence to be followed. This sequence establishes only some of the repercussions that took place majorly on America as a result of their poorly thought out plan to invade Iraq. Listing is also used again later on in the extract when the speaker says that “Iran’s strategic position, increased threats posed by terrorist organizations, reduced U.S creditibilty, and influence around the world, and placed Israel and other nations [friendly] to the United Stated in the region in greater peril.” The speaker lists a few actions Iran has done to create a greater peril on friendly nations to the US including their strategic position, their increased threats, their reduced US credibility, and the influence around the world. It appears that the speaker and most importantly the United States recognizes Iran's positioning and is ready to withdraw. By all means, the speaker is emphasizing the several consequences of carrying on needless wars, as it also portrays their regret by presenting their sorrow to the killing of American soldiers and the avoidability of this event. America is demanding to bring back their troops to prevent any more hurtful deaths from happening and to prevent any more lives from being completely ruined. The speaker also uses chiasmus when he speaks about the reason why we ended up with all these consequences and repercussions and according to the speaker that reason is that “Iraq has not been a failure of resolve, it has been a failure of strategy”, while he also mentions later on that America is resolved. The message behind this use of chiasmus aims to establish the two important aspects of being successful at war. Resolve and strategy, being at agreement with your people, and finding an effective strategy that would result in the least killings and death in the case of the tone of this speech. This represents Chiasmus is used when the speaker says that “we’re not as careless getting out of this war as we were getting”. The speaker recognizes the immense and irreversible consequences of this war and feels sorrow for the families that have lost loved ones due to a senseless war. The speaker wants to make sure that we avoid as much killings and deaths of American soldiers as possible by being less careless getting out. The Americans have printed their foot deep in the souls of Iran, and it would be inevitable to think that there will be fewer killings and deaths of American soldiers. Chiasmus is also used when the speaker aims “to right the wrongs we see in Iraq”. Despite the fact that they are a major reason for the killings and deaths of their American soldiers, they hope to right the wrongs in Iraq. This briefly sheds light on an authority bias or sense of logos because they are using the logic of the consequences of the waging of needless wars to fix any wrongs that could potentially arise in Iraq.
