ESRM 411- PLANT PROPAGATION SEEDING LAB - APRIL 17, 2008 DUE MAY 8, 2008 (3 weeks) 1. Today, you are going to sow seeds and keep records on their germination for a period of two weeks. You will need to check them daily, especially. YOU WILL BE WORKING IN PAIRS. It would also be advisable that you watch over each other’s flats. If you see something drying, then water it CAREFULLY. 2. You will each sow THREE (3) mini-flats. After sowing and watering in, you will place them in the following three (3) treatments: NOTE: A DEMONSTRATION FLAT WILL BE SET UP FOR YOU TO FOLLOW so that you understand a mini-flat and a support flat. TREATMENT AMOUNT A. Greenhouse - zone #1 2 mini-flat/1 support flat - open bench with supplemental light, with SEEDING SOIL MIX 75 F day, 55 F night B. Greenhouse- zone # 1 2 mini-flat/1 support flat -open bench with supplemental light, with Cedar Grove Compost 75 F day, 55 F night C. Coldframe(Polyhouse ) 2 mini-flat/1 support flat - ambient day/night temperature - UNDER PROPAGATION DOME, with SEEDING SOIL MIX - no extra light/heat 3. You will fill your trays. FOR PARTS - A and C, fill with the SEEDING SOIL MIX FOR PART B , FILL WITH CEDAR GROVE MIX. Work in PAIRS so that you can help each other out. Wet the mixes carefully in separate plastic barrels (wheel barrels). You will be carefully filling your trays from the mixtures in the wheelbarrows. BEFORE planting, FIRM the soil mixture, as instructed. After you have sown your mini-tray, you need to place your tray along side your partner’s in a larger support tray. 4. Each person must prepare your own labels, one label for each treatment and for each type of plant. Always use a PENCIL. (Did you bring your PENCILS?) On EACH label, put your name, today’s date, plant name, and treatment name and/or number. 5. There are 6 different types of seeds which everyone sows per flat: Beet “Red Ace Hybrid” 10 seeds Carrot “ Ingot” 10 seeds Lettuce “Great Lakes” 10 seeds Marigold “Crackerjack ” 10 seeds Parsley “Moss Curled” 10 seeds Portulaca “Double Mix” 10 seeds 6. In ONE of your treatments, add 6 seeds of two vegetables (as outlined below). Place them in the treatment in which you expect germination to be best. Observe what happens. Relate it to weather, fertility, etc. The following people in each pair should plant seeds as follows: INDIVUAL STUDENT # 1’s: INDIVIDUAL STUDENT # 2’s: Sweet Corn “Early Sunglo” Radish “Cherry Belle” Onion “White Bunching” Pepper “California Wonder” Squash “Zucchini” Cucumber “Marketmore 76” 7. Count out and plant the appropriate number of seeds as indicated above. It might be a good idea to read what is on the seed packets. 8. Each person will plant, label and water in their own seeds. This work will be done in the Headhouse. Place your trays in the proper location on the carts. It is your responsibility to see that each one of your trays ends up in each of the proper test zones. 9. When finished, EACH PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CLEANING UP YOUR OWN MESS. 10. On a daily basis, you should monitor the germination of your seeds. Don’t forget to help each other out. It will be YOUR OWN RESPONSIBILITY FOR WATERING YOUR PLANTS ON THE WEEKDAYS (M - F). We will be responsible for watering on the weekends. 11. The Greenhouse is open from Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 p.m.) 12. You are to keep accurate records as follows for the next two weeks - ending date of May 1, 2008. 13. At that time, you may take your seedlings with you. Otherwise we will dispose of them.
